YOU CAN NEVER DO A KINDESS TOO SOON BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN TOO SOON IS TOO LATE. – Ralph Waldo Emerson
A Girl Revolution has begun in Tanzania. What is that, you ask? It’s when a girl realizes that SHE becomes the solution to her problems. It’s when she STOPS believing that her chance to get an education depends on a hand out.
Shukuru’s pilot program has just launched in Tanzania, helping 51 girls take charge of their future by investing in their own secondary education.
Shukuru’s innovative, entrepreneurial approach enables girls to earn complete funding for four years of their secondary school education in just one year.
HOW? Through an in-kind microloan, Shukuru sets girls up with an age-appropriate chicken farming enterprise, provides financial literacy and ongoing skill-based training, and taps them into a distribution network ensuring they’re able to earn the funds needed to complete their education and repay their loans.
Throughout the year, donor matching of the girls’ earnings provides them with additional incentive to save, while Shukuru safeguards the funds through an educational trust. Shukuru uses the girls’ loan repayments to re-invest the next cycle of girls, giving the model promise of both scalability and sustainability.
As opposed to being given a hand-out, girls are armed with confidence and self-reliant skills to become economically empowered. After one year in Shukuru’s program, girls save enough to attend all four years of secondary school and, most importantly, learn that they can spark change.
WHY? An educated girl can change the world. Girls are Africa’s great untapped potential. They have an incredible work ethic and motivation, they just need skills and opportunity.
In Tanzania, students have to pay to attend high school. The transition to secondary school is a common drop out point. Often times girls are left behind; they can’t afford it. Under-educated and disempowered girls in Africa are likely to be married off as young as 12 years old and pregnant shortly thereafter.
But when girls are educated, they uplift the world. They marry later, have fewer children, earn 25% more, and break the generational dependency!
WHAT IS SHUKURU?
Shukuru is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization helping girls in Africa stay in school by investing in their own education. We’ve recently launched our pilot project in Tanzania, East Africa.
WHAT DOES SHUKURU MEAN?
Shukuru means gratitude in Kiswahili, the local language in Tanzania. Shukuru’s founder, JoAnne Longanilla says gratitude is how she describes her experience of the people and country. Since founding the organization, she also says it represents her own personal journey in this work.
HOW IS SHUKURU’S APPROACH UNIQUE?
Innovative and Entrepreneurial - Our program empowers girls in Tanzania to earn their own funds for secondary education (equivalent to high school in the US) in a way that’s culturally relevant and financially sustainable. For our pilot, girls will be chicken farming.
Shukuru’s program includes the following elements:
Income Generation - Shukuru girls will be given an in-kind microloan of baby chicks, feed, supplies and training enabling them to earn enough money in a year to pay for four years of secondary schooling.
Community buy-in –In collaboration with the local government and traditional leaders, girls receive hands-on support from their families in raising the chickens, along with ongoing animal husbandry guidance from village agricultural officers.
Financial Literacy – In partnership with BizWorld Foundation’s curriculum, Shukuru girls will be taught age-appropriate basic money management and entrepreneurial business skills in a class of their peers.
Microsavings with Matching - To further incentivize the girls, their earnings will be matched by Shukuru; and to ensure all the girls’ funds are actually used for their education, their profits will be wirelessly deposited and safeguarded under a Shukuru Trust account with a local bank.
School Selection and Tuition Payment – Shukuru will work with district officers to advocate for the girls in the program to ensure they attend the highest quality secondary schools possible. When tuition is due, the money will be transferred directly from the bank to the school.
WHY THIS PROJECT?
An entrepreneurial model with matching offers girls the opportunity to pay for their own education and develop self-reliance, provides an incentive to save, and minimizes risk of theft, appropriation and embezzlement.
HOW DO I KNOW THE CHICKEN RAISING MODEL WILL WORK?
It’s a proven business model in Tanzania. This concept has already had success with adults and disabled farmers. Shukuru is adopting it for young girls – it’s both culturally and age-appropriate.
Girls and their families are already putting equity into the program and beginning to build their chicken coops. Their first flock is scheduled to arrive mid-December, but, the girls’ chance at self-financing their own education will be HALTED without your help!
- 51 Inspiring Girls want to be role-models for ending the dependency cycle. They need a leg-up; NOT a hand-out.
- 51 Motivated Girls are seizing the opportunity to pay for their secondary education and put the future in their OWN hands.
- 51 Liberated Girls are imagining themselves as the first graduating class of 2017 who paid their own school fees. It’s possible WITH your donation today!
WHAT WE NEED
Our goal for this campaign is $30,000 which will continue the launch of the pilot.
- Girls will be provided with the materials, services and support to manage their micro business.
- As we increase the program and refine the number of girls, it will become self-funding, as the revenue from one class of girls can be completely supportive of another class. Your funding will help drive this cycle of re-investment for years to come.
