My name is Clabbe and I was born in Stockholm, Sweden.
Growing up I always envied those kids who had both parents present as my own parents divorced when I was 7 years old.
As I grew older I started to understand how fortunate I was being born in Sweden and that there were kids who was growing up under worse conditions then I did. Some didnt even have any parents.
Through all my journeys in our world, I have come to realize that life is not about the things you own, but the things you do. I have also come to realize that time is a very valuable commodity.
I will realize one of my dreams this November when I leave my job as a Manager in order to return to Africa to invest my time in helping others and I need YOUR help to be able to do it!
Let me tell you a story...
The land of the Mountain Lions
In March 1991 the civil war broke out in the little west African country of Sierra Leone. The rebel fraction – also known as the RUF, received a reputation among civilians for extreme cruelty.
Empowered by the rifles they carried, and often high on marijuana or crack cocaine, The rebel fraction performed terrible atrocities on the civilian population like amputation of the arms and legs of men, women, and children. Even if you were just suspected of supporting the “other” side.
When the war finally ended in January 2002, the 11 year long conflict had enveloped the country, left more that 50,000 Sierra Leoneans dead and displaced some 2.5 million people, half of the population.
In December this year I am travelling to Sierra Leone. I am going be volunteering and working with the UK based organization Street Child. A recent research has showed that there is about 50.000 street children in Sierra Leone alone. This is what I would like to spend my time on.
objective is to empower children through education, working with out-of-school children and street kids throughout Sierra Leone and West Africa. The program "Every Child in School" was created and several school structures have been constructed in remote, rural communities around Sierra Leone. The program also provides teacher training, services and material which has created educational oppotunities for around 10.000 children across the country.
Street child provides financial and managerial support as well as other practical
training so that the families can open a small business in order to become
self-sufficient and keep the child in school.
Since the start in 2008, Street Child has managed to reunite more then 2,000 children with their families, and an amazing 95% of the children has stayed in school and stayed off the street.
Today Sierra Leone is one of
the poorest countries in the world, but it is also has the second fastest growing economy in the world which shows that the
country is heading in the right direction. And with your help we can ensure
that more children get their right to education to continue drive Sierra Leone
forward as members and future leaders of their country.
While no one can do everything, everyone can do something...
If you would like to see the direct impact of your donation, I invite you to join me on this journey. Not only will you see what the money goes directly to but you will also see the effect it has on the life of a child. And you will help to build the future of Sierra Leone.
What is the impact?
Education is the key to a bright future and opens up huge opportunities for people in many ways around the world. With your donation Street Child can ensure that they can continue their work with providing children the education they need in order to get the country back on its feet again.
A lot of people donate money to different organizations in their home country and feel proud that they can contribute to help someones life to be a bit better in a country far far away. But do you ever see exactly what your donated money go to? or how much of it that actually reaches its purpose?
By donating to this project, you will get a first hand look and impression on how your donations helps me to help street children in Sierra Leone!
How YOU can help
I have already bought my flight tickets since I will cover the basic costs myself which are calculated as:
- Flight tickets ($800)
- Health and travel insurance ($500)
- Medication - Vaccinations/malaria medicine ($600)
- Rent and bills while Im away ($1,500)
- Visa and Letter of Invitation ($300)
- Cover the IndieGoGo and Paypal fees. (4% if success, 9% if not +3% PayPal)
I am looking to raise $2,800 for this part of my journey.
$2,300 will go directly to Street Child for usage as they are solely dependent on donations and the money will go to
- School material (books, pens, papers and so on)
- Education of teachers
- Building material for schools in rural areas
- Streets Child´s other life-changing projects through out Sierra Leone.
Food twice a day
If I manage to raise money above the $2,800 target, they will be used to different projects that I will encounter on my following trip throughout Africa during my 200 Days in Africa project
Maybe a new well needs to be built in a remote village to ensure clean water or a orphanage that needs a new roof ?
Did you know that $100 will cover 2 weeks of nutritious and well balanced food for a kid? or give 100 liters (thats 26.5 gallons) of clean water?
