Be a part of Modern Fuel's Step to the Tett
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre is working to raise $15,000 this year to help fund our move to the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. These funds will go towards the "fit up" costs associated with the new space, including a significant improvement in health and safety requirements, increased accessibility, updated equipment for an improved media workspace and proper display and seating for our Nan Yeomans Resource Centre.
This move is an essential step for Modern Fuel. In addition to improved facility conditions, it will offer increased visibility, and more active collaborative opportunities: a communal space for artists and gallery members, the public and school groups.
3 reasons to contribute to the Step to the Tett Campaign:
1. Accessible new exhibition spaces. Before we can move to the Tett Centre, we'll need to outfit the new space. Track lighting, plywood-backed drywall, sound baffles--everything that makes a gallery a gallery.
2. Strength in numbers. Your contribution, no matter what size, will make a big difference. Not only will you help us generate grant-matching funds for this initiative, demonstrated support from the community strengthens Modern Fuel's future applications.
3. Lasting effect. Your contribution today will have a permanent impact on Modern Fuel, which in turn will support contemporary arts in the community in the long run.
Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre needs to move and you can help make this a reality. We are one of the oldest and most distinguished artist-run centres in the country and a crucial contributor to the Eastern Ontario arts ecology. It serves as a focal point of art and culture in the Kingston region by providing professional opportunities for established and emerging contemporary artists in the area, and by serving as an incubator for the professional development of arts and culture professionals through volunteer and other opportunities such as mentorship.
After a long period of research Modern Fuel found a perfect spot for us to move to: the Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, Kingston’s new and emerging arts hub and creative cluster. This move will alleviate Modern Fuel’s longstanding uncertainty with regard to its location and allow for the strengthening and expanding of its capacity to deliver the exciting cultural programs that it provides.
The former J.K. Tett Centre at 370 King Street West, will re-open as the redeveloped and refurbished Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning in 2014.
Though the City of Kingston will be covering the majority of the overall building’s renovation costs in the development of the heritage site, each tenant is responsible for the costs associated with the unique and specific needs of their organization. Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre will use your funding to subsidize the construction of a space designed with the gallery's needs in mind, fully accessible gallery and programming space at the Tett Centre.
What We Need & What You Get
To be honest what we need most is money. The estimated total cost to make the new space ready to be a gallery is close to $100,000. As part of our fundraising strategy we are approaching many sources, including applying for government grants and private sector funds. We were thrilled to recently learn that we were successful in securing $53,200 toward our move to the Tett from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (an agency of the Government of Ontario). All fundraising support contributes to the larger picture, providing important leverage for other potential sources of funding. Your donation is an integral part of the larger whole.
As an avid supporter of the arts and culture in Kingston, your donation will have incredible impact, scope and reach. On a practical level: you donation helps cover fit up costs directly. Your contribution also strengthens and develops the arts and culture scene in Kingston, and creates compelling evidence of community support of Modern Fuel to others across our community, our province, and our country. We are trying to reach the goal of $15,000 in 2 months. Every little bit helps! This means no donation is too small!
We are excited to offer you unique perks in exchange for your donations. You can receive: unique Modern Fuel perks like a tote bag, artist postcards, a screen printed poster, and more. It’s how we show our thanks to you, and how you let your community know that you value and support Modern Fuel.
Where Your Money is Going:
Your money will help build two art gallery spaces with gallery-standard track lighting and reinforced walls to accommodate the hanging of the diverse body of art Modern Fuel shows , a community resource space for programs and workshops that respond to the professional development needs of regional artists and educators, a separate new media workspace with independent access, and an administrative support office.
These costs include electrical wiring and outlet installation, plumbing fit ups, track lighting installation, contractor fees, ensuring that the space has proper ventilation, water supply, and that it is safe and fully accessible to all members of our community.
Our 36-year track record as a successful arts organization demonstrates that we are a sustainable and dynamic organization that possesses the best practices, experience, staffing infrastructure and support to excel at the Tett and contribute to its success and sustainability. At the Tett, Modern Fuel would continue to provide the type of excellent programming that its mandate supports and its history confirms.
The new location would also afford us the much-needed space we require in order to grow some of our programs, including the New Media Workspace and the Vapours concert series. Modern Fuel is a dynamic and active centre and its many exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, artist talks, panel discussions and performances would serve to draw a larger, more diverse audience to the Tett Centre.
Other Ways You Can Help
We hope to harness the goodwill of hundreds of people, and then repay those good people with unique Modern Fuel perks like tote bags, artist postcards, screen printed posters, and more.
