Daniel Mays was riding passenger in a vehicle that was struck head-on by a drunk driver. By some miracle, his friend, the driver, only suffered minor physical injuries and Daniel's dog, Jelly, was uninjured. Unfortunately, Daniel was airlifted from a Boulder, CO hospital to Denver Health in critical condition and remains on life support. Daniel suffered a very severe traumatic injury to his brain stem area, along with multiple facial and skull fractures. His friends, Mother and relatives are staying optimistic, praying and remaining positive as Daniel slowly struggles to improve.
To make the situation more difficult, Daniel is without health insurance and facing enormous medical bills.
Daniel Mays is a very talented artist. He had been attending Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design but had to take a break before his last semester to save money for school. He was working a full-time job and trying to save money to finish his education when this tragic accident occured.
Daniel remains in a coma, but continues to make small improvements every day. He is off his respirator, breathing on his own with oxygen and humidity for small amounts throughout the day, the facial surgery he underwent went well, and the ventriculater pulling fluid off his brain was removed. Daniel is fighting off an infection in the bone marrow of his jaw and also suffering from hematomas around his brain. He opens his left eye throughout the day and seems to be trying to focus on the people talking. We all know and believe that Daniel is coming out of the coma and trying to wake up. He seems to respond when people talk about his favorite things with his lips trying to move, tightening his grip on your hand, blinking his open eye more and trying to focus on the person talking.
Continue to keep Daniel in your thoughts and send good vibes his way. Daniel is a very happy, optimistic, spiritual and postive person himself, so he would want everyone around him to stay the same. Daniel himself has always believed in miracles, so continue to pray and remain optimistic!
Family + Friends
Daniel's mother, Robin Mays, is currently in the process of moving to Denver to be closer to her son during this long and difficult recovery process. What makes this situation even more difficult, Robin recently lost her job at the University of Michigan and is financially stuggling herself. With the enormous medical bills Daniel and his mother are facing, things are going to be difficult. The last thing Robin should be worrying about is finances when she is trying to stay positive and optimistic for Daniel. While the state of Colorado is trying to help with getting Daniel on a program for his hospital expenses, it is still going to be a financial struggle for him and his family.

The driver who struck Daniel's vehicle head-on had 3 previous DUI's. He had just gotten his driving privileges back in Texas from his 2010 DUI conviction. More than anything, this accident demonstrates how devastating impaired driving can be. Whether it be drinking, drugs, texting, or talking on the phone, impared driving can lead to serious accidents. Daniel's family and friends want everyone to remember this the next time they get behind the wheel. A few seconds of your life can effect someone elses for the rest of theirs.
