“Roots” music is music that is considered to be American either because it is native to our country or because it was developed here. Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues, and Jazz define the American Experience, and WUSM defines Roots Radio. WUSM-FM (88.5 fm) broadcasts from the Hattiesburg campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. WUSM celebrates American roots music with a strong Mississippi influence from a 60,000 plus music library.
WUSM is currently broadcasting using extremely outdated equipment and will soon be making the move to a new studio across campus in the newly renovated College Hall. However, there is a shortage of funding for new crucial broadcasting equipment. As an attempt to raise funds for WUSM's faciliities, we have partnered with a local restaurant/bar to host a one-day festival titled the "Spring Slumgullion!"
We are a group of Entertainment Industry students from The University of Southern Mississippi. Through our Live Business Production class, we are volunteering to assist WUSM in this financial need to help promote roots music in our area.
The Spring Slumgullion will be held in Hattiesburg, MS at the Keg & Barrel on March 24, 2013 at 12 PM and will feature numerous local and regional artists, including:
1. Wes Lee
2. Thomas Jackson
3. Cary Hudson
4. Scott Chism and the Better Half
5. Drew Young
6. Vanity Furr
7. Dr. E and the MS Voodoo Kings
8. Southbound Crescent
We didn’t want this to just be a pre-sale for tickets but wanted to bring something of value to the community, so we put our heads together and came up with the perks to the right. Support USM’s radio station, students, local music, and Hattiesburg's small business by choosing one of the perks to the side…or you can forego choosing and just get them all!
But we went one step further. The Hattiesburg area recently was the victim of a major tornado that ripped through our campus on February 10, nearly destroying all of the School of Music's facilities. Southern Miss is 1 of 34 institutions in the nation accredited in all four arts areas. Therefore, the destruction of our music facilities was a major blow to the school. We will be donating 5% of all contributions following our goal, to the University of Southern Mississippi's School of Music.
We want everybody involved in this campaign. If you can’t contribute monetarily, you can still contribute by sharing this with your friends. The importance of promoting and supporting local arts in our county is paramount; please help us continue to do so.
**Please be sure to add your name when you choose a perk package so that we are able to fulfill your perk. Also, if you pick a package that includes a t-shirt in it, please email your t-shirt size to indiegogoteam@gmail.com so that we can guarantee that we have the size you need and your package ready to for you.**
