Hi, I'm Thomas Lake, a writer for Sports Illustrated, and I'm asking for your help with Clifton "Pop" Herring. He was a brilliant coach of high-school basketball, and he helped Michael Jordan become the greatest player of all time. After Jordan left, Pop fell on hard times. He became mentally ill, lost his job, lost his wife and daughter, and began living in poverty. Pop is 60 years old now, still living in Wilmington, barely getting by. After I wrote a follow-up story asking Jordan to help him, many readers asked how they could help. So here's how.
What We Need & What You Get
In visiting Pop's home last week, I noticed his living conditions. He could use a dishwasher, a new bed, some new clothes and some new shoes. Probably some other things too, but those were the most noticeable.
So, I'm hoping we can put together a little money to go toward those things. I'm not really concerned with how much. Anything is better than nothing, and I'm convinced it's the thought that counts. When we give our gifts to Pop, he'll know the world has not forgotten him.
I'm planning to work with Pop's landlord, Leroy Grady, to bring this all together. He's the guy Pop trusts to manage his government checks and make them last through the month. So I think he'll be just the right guy to make sure these donations get properly spent.
If you believe in this campaign, please share it with your friends on social media with the IndieGogo share tools.
To keep track of our progress, you can follow me on Twitter @thomaslake -- once the fundraising is done and we've bought the things for Pop, I'll post pictures and video so you can see for yourself.
Pop was a kind and loving man before he got sick. We can't fix all his problems, but we can show him a little love.
Other Ways You Can Help
Pop loves to get mail. Just write him a letter. That would truly make his day. In fact, it might even be better than a donation. I don't think he would mind me sharing his address:
