Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha, also known as “HOPA”, is a Hawaiian treat shop where you can enjoy all-natural, homemade, handcrafted shave ice, a social enterprise out to make a difference in the world, but most importantly a welcoming house for all, to come together as 'ohana (family) to authentically experience Pure Aloha and feel the real magic and beauty of Hawaii.
Over a half century ago, a young little boy named Clay would visit his neighborhood’s candy shop, and every time say, “I wanna own this store one day!”
Over four decades later, Clay’s dream was still alive. So he finally trusted his heart and leapt. In 1996, Clay turned his childhood dream into reality and became the fourth proprietor of “Doe Fang” in Aina Haina Shopping Center in East Oahu.
For fourteen years, seven days a week, Clay served with all his heart. What was once an ordinary candy store was now a place where tens of thousands of people from across the globe found friendship, love, inspiration, and peace. Still, business was tough. An end seemed inevitable.
In 2007, while sipping down a Hawaiian Superman ICEE and basking in the store’s Pure Aloha, Uncle Clay’s nephew, Bronson, was hit with inspiration. He envisioned countless generations tied together in Pure Aloha tradition and memories through the store. He saw Hawaii fully embodied in a place that could one day share the island's spirit of Aloha in other communities around the world. This was not the end, the dream was just beginning.
Upon college graduation, Bronson went straight home to Hawaii and joined Uncle Clay as an equal partner. Together, with the great help of the community, they launched Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha in June 2011.
In its first year, HOPA has already served tens of thousands of people and received numerous awards ('Ilima Awards, Honolulu Family Magazine, City and State honorary certificates). The HOPA team now includes seven HOPAHs (HOPA Hosts), a world-class advisory group, and countless supporters spreading HOPA Love and moving us foward to our vision:
"Our entire one world 'ohana connected, heart-to-heart, through Pure Aloha".
Help Launch Share-HOPA-Forward!
In celebration of Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha’s (HOPA) one year anniversary, the Share-HOPA-Forward campaign is being launched to help bring the gift of shave ice to others.
By donating to the Share-HOPA-Forward campaign, you can help spread Pure Aloha, one shave ice at a time!
Share-HOPA-Forward is based on a "pay-it-forward" system: a concept of asking that a good deed be repaid by passing it on to others.
In this year 2012, our campaign goal is to raise an initial fund of 2,012 donated shave ice that will be shared with various members of our one world 'ohana.
Once we reach our goal, HOPA will host “Sharing Days” in late August. These “Sharing Days” will be held at pop-up locations throughout the island where HOPA will serve anyone in attendance the gift of a shave ice paid for in advance by donors. During “Sharing Days” patrons may simply enjoy their shave ice free of charge or continue the pay-it-forward chain by donating a delicious HOPA shave ice for another person.
In addition to the gifted shave ice, “Sharing Day” recipients will also receive a personalized notecard from someone who contributed to the Share-HOPA-Forward campaign. This way the recipient can more fully understand that they are on the receiving end of a good deed and they, too, may choose to pay-it-forward for someone else.
Donations can be made in person at the House in Aina Haina Shopping Center or through this IndieGoGo campaign website. Though donations in any amount are welcomed, it will cost HOPA roughly $3.00 to produce one Share-HOPA-Forward shave ice. This conservative cost includes raw materials, labor, setup/transportation, and campaign fees/collateral/promotion. However, if it ends up costing less than projected, the excess funds will be recycled into the pay-it-forward fund to share even more shave ice!
