Your generous support will help Schweinehund become a full-length theatre piece.
Schweinehund is a puppetry and animation piece created and directed by me, Andy Gaukel.
Inspired by the life of Pierre Seel— who was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned by the Nazis in 1941 on suspicion of being gay— Schweinehund is a meditation on Seel’s real-life tragedy during this dark time.
Funds generated by the generous Indiegogo community will be used to help fund the final phase of Schweinehund's development. This phase includes rehearsing the piece and preparing it to be premiered in front of a live audience with the aim of touring Schweinehund to theatres, schools, universities and festivals around the world.
Your donation will:
Pay for a rehearsal/workshop space this summer in Louisville, KY.
Help compensate my dedicated team of talented performers and artists involved.
Pay for a video projector for projecting Schweinehund’s animations.
Pay for the lighting equipment needed to light the puppetry.
Pay for media materials such as posters, photos and advertising to help further promote Schweinehund.
Any funds received past our goal will go towards bringing Schweinehund to a wider audience.
Schweinehund History, Techniques and Hopes:
Initially developed as a ten-minute workshop performance for the 2011 Xperimental Puppetry Theater Program at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, GA, myself and my team are now focused on developing Schweinehund into a full-length puppet theater production that will premiere in 2014.
To tell this delicate story, I have decided to use Bunraku inspired puppet manipulation combined with projected hand-drawn animations to create an integrated choreographed movement piece set to music.
To create the animation in Schweinehund, I am collaborating with Michael Collin, an artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. Michael's animations create the perfect juxtaposition to the bleak world and devastating story the puppetry tells.
What started as a pursuit to bring one man’s tragic story to life, has evolved into a gripping and deeply personal meditation on the depths of cruelty and the resilience of the human spirit.
My team and I hope to share this amazing and touching story in hope that it will increase understanding and create a dialogue among the generations of today that will positively impact the future.
It's no secret, the biggest challenge in producing live theatre is financing. Even with my team of incredible artists, all the talent in the world won't provide the necessary equipment and means needed to fulfill our vision.
Without you, this kind of theatre cannot exist.
Thank you so much for your support,
