Why new uniforms? The ones we own aren’t falling apart. They are technically in good condition. Here are the problems with the uniforms….the jackets we have are virtually impossible to wear in any condition warmer than 50 degree weather. We live in California and rarely march under those conditions. Our uniform jackets spend most of their time folded up on top of our hat boxes because it is too hot to wear them. The hat boxes are to the point now where they no longer stay snapped shut and when the students carry them they fall open, spilling the hats on the ground.
The second major problem with the uniform is the sizing of them. The demographic of our students has clearly changed because there are hardly any students in the current ST Marching Band that has a uniform that fits properly. The jackets are boxy and too big for most of the students. The pants make every person in the band look two to three sizes bigger. You could say, “well at least they aren’t falling apart” and that’s true, but they are falling off the kids and baking them! My students are proud to be in the Santa Teresa Band program but they are not proud to wear their uniforms. In the journey of designing and fundraising for the uniforms I found out that most of the students are actually embarrassed by the uniforms, and don’t look forward to wearing them. When I found it out it just broke my heart. For as hard as these students work and for as well as they continue to perform and succeed at competitions, they don’t have pride in wearing their uniforms….the very thing that they perform in.
A marching band uniform should enhance your program. It should make your members look taller, leaner, and showcase the marching technique. The fit of the uniform should encourage a positive performance from the student. It should not confine them. We need a uniform that will complement our performance. While no judge has said this on an adjudication recording (but some have said it off the record), “you need to get new uniforms. It will help your marching score” and some have said “you need a uniform that represents the program you are today…. not the program you once were.” People in the business world talk all the time about branding a product. Even though not everyone in our band program is in marching band (the majority are) it is the most visible portion of our band program. We need a uniform that screams “WE ARE SANTA TERESA HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND” and we believe that this design does. Interestingly, the students have told me that this uniform drive, regardless of whether the students are in marching band or not, has helped bring them together for a common goal and is going to be a legacy that they will leave for future band members. We are so close and need your help to raise the final $6,000 so we can make the last payment. We have already raised $39,000 in donations, grants, and money from our school and school district. We are offering some very fun rewards including the opportunity to become a Santa Teresa band member for a day! We have many other needs for our band program and if this campaign is successful and we go over our goal, it will help us purchase new equipment and repair old equipment. Thank you in advance for your support - and remember, if you can't donate you can still help by sharing this link and spreading the word.
