A Note from the Director
Thank you SO much for checking out our second IndieGogo campaign page!
We are SO close to completing our passion project, a modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare's romantic comedy AS YOU LIKE IT set in San Francisco!
Last January, we ran our first IndieGogo campaign and raised a whopping $12,000 (!) through IndieGogo and private donations, thanks to the generosity of people like you - friends, family, IndieGogo community members, Shakespeare lovers, independent cinema supporters, and complete strangers.
Although our original goal was to raise $14,500, none of us could wait to get started... and so we moved ahead with production as scheduled and shot for two incredibly beautiful and challenging weeks.
We now only have one-third left to shoot (!), which is totally amazing (after having worked on this for over sixteen months)! We want to see this project done, and the thought of not being able to wrap it up due to a lack of funds is heartbreaking! Too much love, blood, sweat and tears has gone into making this to walk away, so we are asking for your help in raising the final funds that will enable us to wrap up our final week of filming.
So, THANK YOU, again, for stopping by and checking out our page. If you haven't aleady watched our official teaser trailer (above), please do! It'll show you what we have been up to, and in which direction we are headed - with your help.
Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" meets Richard Curtis' "Love Actually" in this bold, feature-length adaptation of one of Shakespeare's most popular romantic comedies, "As You Like It."
Directed by University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts graduate Marika Sonja Cotter, "LOVE: As You Like It" will take viewers on a wild ride through San Francisco's hip, artsy and culturally diverse Mission District as a dynamic group of characters struggle with what it means to love, and to be loved.
The story follows free-spirited Rosalind, who falls for the wrong boy, and her beautiful, lovelorn cousin, Celia, as they run away from Celia's father and move to the city to experience life at its fullest. Disguised as hipsters, and joined by their rich, video-game junkie cousin, Touchstone, they meet a compelling cast of characters who are all grappling with this idea of Love - what it means to love, to be loved, to overcome fear in order to love; love for ideology, love for God and religion, love for oneself, for one's partner, friends and family.
Cotter's goal is to approach Shakespeare naturally - in terms of language and performance - but to maintain a highly-stylized visual perspective. She finds inspiration in the films of Kenneth Branagh, Wes Anderson, Baz Luhrmann, and Richard Curtis, and she looks forward to sharing her interpretation with the Shakespeare and cinema communities.
What We Need & What You Get
Before starting in on this section, we just want to point out that the average budget for a Hollywood film is somewhere between $40,000,000 and $80,000,000! Where does all that money go?!
The remaining $2,500 that we are asking for is going to help us complete principal photography and move into post production:
- camera, grip and lighting rental costs
- sound recordist and equipment
- transportation/travel costs
- daily meals for cast and crew
If we are not able to raise the entire $2,500, we will move ahead and shoot as much as we can, adjusting the script and making more cuts in order to complete filming. We are hoping to avoid this compromise, however, as we've already had to make many cuts and any more would likely affect the story.
You'll notice some perks there on your right. Any amount donation DOES make a huge difference and we hope to show our gratitude by offering some interesting perks such as producer credit on IMDB and screening tickets to our premieres in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Other Ways to Give
"LOVE: As You Like It" cannot be made without your help, so please - MAKE SOME NOISE about our campaign! We value you as a viewer and hope that you will help us create something that is beautiful, artistic, unique and true to the spirit of Shakespeare.
If you can't donate financially, please take a minute or two to like this campaign, to share with your friends on Facebook and Twitter, to visit our website at www.loveasyoulikeit.com. The most successful campaigns are those that are spread by word of mouth, and that's not something we can do on our own; we need YOU.
The beauty of this film is that it requires PEOPLE LIKE YOU to get involved - artists, visionaries, Shakespeare lovers, cinephiles, students, performers. With your help, we can introduce a new generation to the wonders of Shakespeare and pay tribute to the continued relevancy of his works!
