My name is Sue and I'm 60 years old. After the company for whom I worked went out of business, I decided to make my dream of rescuing horses (many of which are bound for illegal slaughter across the US border) come true. I only could afford to purchase three acres of property. I live there as well, for a total "hands on" experience. I am in dire need of a riding lawn mower to mow the weeds that the horses simply do not eat. The weeds are at least 5 feet high in some areas and I'm concerned about the snakes and spiders bothering the horses.
Rockin' Horse Retirement is currently home to two senior horses, Miss La Touche, who will be 31 in January; and Blum Gone, 23 in March. Touche is an Appy x Arabian cross, bred by Burt Reynolds. Her previous owner lost her home to foreclosure; the bank insisted Touche be removed "immediately" or she would be sent to slaughter. The owner had no place affordable to keep Touche, so I purchased my land so both mare and owner would have peace of mind. The owner subsequently died of cancer. Blum Gone is a thoroughbred racehorse. He raced 157 times, mostly in $5,000 claiming races. Its a testament to his hardiness that he's still able to walk! He's a beautiful grey gelding, with an independent, but kind, nature. His grandsire is the GREAT Dr. Fager, who, in my opinion, is the finest throughbred of recent history. I love them both dearly. Before Blum arrived, I had rescued a pregnant BLM Mustang mare. Unbeknownist to me at the time of rescue, Tiger Lily was pregnant. Her filly foal, whom I named after my deceased mother, Stella by Starlight, has found a wonderful home. Lily died suddenly last February of an unknown neurological problem.
What We Need & What You Get
I know my financial goal is realistic. As an older woman, I am leery of purchasing a used mower from Craigslist and then not being able to fix it should it break. I have researched mowers on-line and know a nice, reliable one can be had for under $1,000. I hope to also purchase one that will pick up leaves. My property has a tree lined driveway and lots of shade for the horses, but that also comes with the downside of..... falling leaves! I am now in the process of raking and bagging billions of leaves.
For every $25 you donate, you will receive at least one homemade greeting card. Your choice of subject, i.e., "Merry Christmas," "Happy Birthday" , "Condolences," etc.
If someone would like to donate the entire amount, I have a brand new, still in package, Duluth duffel bag (retail price around $175)
