Rimelands - Turn-based RPG Goodness
Rimelands: Hammer of Thor was originally released for iPhone on the beginning of September 2010 and went on to quickly gather a number of favorable reviews (the Metascore of the game being 8.9).
In essence, it’s a turn-based roleplaying game with very boardgame-like mechanics, inspired by games such as HeroQuest and Descent: Journeys in the Dark.
Rimelands is set in a steampunk world where mankind has recently re-emerged, after a thousand year long ice age, only to discover that magic has returned on Earth, and a mysterious beings called the Fae with it.
You play as Rose Cristo (though you get to change the first name), a young woman raised by her loving grandmother, as she accidentally stumbles onto an adventure that will change her life -- and the lives of those dear to her.
The story of Rimelands: Hammer of Thor is inspired by pulp adventures of old and thus bears more resemblance to Indiana Jones than to Lord of the Rings.
Rolling the Dice
Rimelands: Hammer of Thor is a turn-based roleplaying game with dice-based combat. You and your enemies take turns to perform single actions (similiar to roguelike-games), outcomes of which are determined by rolls of dice, visible on the screen. You also have a limited number of opportunities to re-roll the dice, adding a new layer of tactical decisions to the rolls.
The game has three character paths, but no fixed classes so you can mix and match a character to your liking. Each path has unique talents that bring in a variety of strategies for you to utilize.
Rimelands mixes randomly generated levels with pre-designed ones to provide variety for multiple playthroughs.
Who are we?
We are a small game studio located in Finland. Dicework Games was established about three years ago, but we both have industry experience on multiple projects before that. Our goal is to create games we love to play, regardless of their perceived commercial potential.
If the game’s already out, what do you need money for?
Despite the critical success, a niche game like Rimelands is a hard sell on such a crowded platform like App Store. We’re collecting the money to fund a PC and Mac conversion of the game, so that people who don’t have iPhones or iPads can also enjoy it. But that’s not all, it’s also a total reimagining of the original, enhanced in multiple ways.
We have already completed remaking the interface and most of the basic things, so what's left is refining the game's content. The money will be used towards that goal, and if we pass the funding goal, to further refine and add content. In addition the content, we'll also be spending time on improving the level editor.
Funders will also be able to vote which kind of new content we'll add.
How does the desktop version differ from the mobile one?
First of all, the whole user interface has been remade to work better on larger screens and keyboard-mouse input.
Second, we have updated the game graphically to take advantage of the multiple times better graphic capabilities of the desktop hardware (though it will still work fine even on older computers).
We have also completely rewritten the story of the game, admittedly the weakest point of the original.
Last, but definitely not least, we will also include an easy-to-use level editor with the game, so you can create your own Rimelands adventures.
What? A level editor?
Yes. While it will not be 100% customizable you will be able to make full functioning levels, complete with events and NPCs. The level editor allows WYSIWYG editing of levels, enemies, treasure and visuals (eg. lighting, effects). All the level data is stored in easily readable text format for additional moddability.
What will the funders get in exchange?
Everyone who donates at least $10 will obviously get a copy of the game when it’s released, as well as a possibility to participate in the beta testing of the game. The beta includes an access to private forums, so you will be able to make comments and suggestions before the beta too.
Other ways to help
If for some reason you can’t or don’t want to donate, you can also help in many ways:
- Spread the word. The more people know about the game, the better.
- Buy the game for iOS. Every penny counts and all the money we get from the sales of the iOS game will be used to fund the desktop version.
- Recommend the iOS game to a friend. Even if you yourself don’t own an iOS device, you probably know someone who does.
