- The Goal
Although most think Route 66 is left back in the history books - we would beg to differ!
Ed Klein is a Preservationist and loves everything Route 66 has to offer. So many places along the route are truly falling by the wayside. And others are left for the 'elements' to take its course.
Why is this sign so important and why should it be restored?
The 66 Motel sign in Needles CA is one of THE most iconic signs along the famed highway. And after doing several other restoration projects, this one was long overdue. The restoration itself will be a simple process - paint, light bulbs, neon, transformers and electrical work to get it lit up again.
- Then why a fundraiser?
The paint and materials will be covered by me. I have already started work on the sign by scraping, cleaning, painting, removing all the broken neon and light bulbs, and pulled transformers and all the old 'bad' wiring.
The fundraiser is mostly for the replacement of the neon lights / glass, the transformers, and the electrical work to get it to 'light up the night sky' like it did over 15 years ago!
The sign will be painted, but the ultimate goal is to have it operating like it did when the motel was a major stop / attraction on the route.
The current owners had to resort into turning the 7 room motel into monthly rentals and have always wanted to light the sign back up, but it was not possible due to lack of funds.
This is where YOU come in!

This project can only happen if we meet out goal. And I would hate to come so close to lighting up the sign just to fall short.
