Reflections Unheard: Black Women in Civil Rights is a feature documentary film about the marginalization of black women between the Black Power and Feminist movements of the 1960s and 70s.
This film re-tells the history of Civil Rights from several black female perspectives, and makes connections as to how our rich history still impacts black women to this day.
Why this is Important
In the midst of a culture that either erases or misrepresents the black female image, I have made it a principle to base my films on the authentic and honest voices, experiences and portrayals of black women. My sole mission for this film is to provide a unique and valuable context in which our both our history and contemporary society can be reflected upon, and to provide a platform in which marginalized black female voices can be heard and validated.
One of the most important aspects of this project is that people witness a film about black women that is actually made by a black woman. Most of the time, our stories are re-written (and re-mixed) for us by other people, and handed to us in various formats throughout our culture and education. I am certain that through this film, people will see a major difference in how our history and culture can be viewed, depending on the perspective.
Why I Need Your Help
I have been working tirelessly on this film by myself for
the past year, and since day one it has been my strongest passion. The only reason why I have been able to get this far is
because I am a film student, and I am able to use the schools resources and
equipment as part of my tuition. Unfortunately, I am a Senior and I will be
graduating very soon, so I will not be able to use these resources for much
longer. As of now, I do not have any personal equipment, resources or funds that I can use to finish the film.
Getting funding for films by and about women of color is
definitely not a cakewalk. Only 6% of Hollywood films are directed by women,
and WAY fewer are directed by black women. Plus, lets face it-this isnt
exactly a Hollywood seller (as its not meant to be), and the mainstream film industry
only thrives on low-risk, profit-ensuring entities.
Ive found that reaching out to groups, organizations and individuals through creative means is one of the most effective ways in which underprivileged artists can spread the word and gain support for their work. I believe that people contribute to what they feel is valuable, and my wish is to get as many people as possible on-board who can support in any way they can.
How Your Contribution will be Used:
The funds raised will be used for:
Archival Research to obtain selected footage that is not accessible in the public domain.
Stock Footage and Licensing
Music licensing and film scoring
Post Production and Editing
We can certainly surpass this current goal of $20,000, since what I will raise via Indiegogo does not make up the entire film budget. The funds I do raise will be used to continue filming the documentary so that there will be more opportunities for fundraising via screenings of the film as it progresses, as well as a solid crew, trailer, and other resources intact to apply for production and post-production grants.
If I do not raise all the necessary funds through Indiegogo, I will need to hold off on filming for a good while longer to focus on fundraising via other means. Film is a very expensive medium of expression, and it can often be limited by financial constraints. However, where there is a will there is a way, and I am most definitely dedicated to completing this project.
*Please remain aware that all producer credits are honorary and do not engender any creative input or legal ownership of the film.
Other ways to Contribute
1. Contribute $10 and spread the word to 10 other people who can pledge the same amount
2. Share this link on facebook, twitter, google, tumblr, or any other social network that you make use of. Remember to use the "share" and "like" buttons at the top of the page.
3. Tell your friends, family, neighbors and network in person. Show them this trailer, and encourage them to support as well.
As the campaign progresses, I will constantly be looking for more outlets to share this vision with as many people as possible, and gain support for this film. I know many of my supporters are already acquainted with thousands of people in person and/or via the internet. Reaching this goal could mean 2,000 people donating $10 each. Spreading the word helps a great deal!
