THE REFINERY PROJECT
WHAT IS THE R/P?
Just beyond the old Waialua Sugar Mill on Oahu’s North Shore, past a mysterious sea of boats docked on red dirt, and nestled against a 70-foot banyan tree whose roots have trapped objects of the past like a time capsule, lies a dream world in the making: The Refinery Project, a gathering place for sharing knowledge and inspiring creativity.
The 11,000 square foot lot was once a tow junkyard and is now being revamped into a collaborative eco-art space like no other. Old Matson shipping containers have been transformed into art studios and workshop areas. Discarded wooden pallets are now the bones of edible gardens, a living bar, and event space. Old bus seats are now chairs for an outdoor movie screening area. A 29-foot bio-diesel bus is morphing into a mobile art gallery and class space.
The Refinery Project is an event space as much as a place to learn and collaborate. Gallery shows for local and international artists as well as film screenings will be held here. Workshops offered to the community will include painting, photography, homesteading, cooking, techie tools, gardening, music, art, and more. R/P’s purpose is to promote the arts by providing a place for local and international creators to convene, to be a collaborative space for community members to inspire and share knowledge, and to be a living example of eco-consciousness.
WHAT WE NEED
In order to achieve an off-grid space, we need solar power installed. Batteries, shipping containers, and tools are also needed to finish and maintain the space. Since all building materials are repurposed from a former life, it is important to have proper tools to revamp them with.
Our goal of $50,000 is to finish the groundwork that has already been laid so that RP will be truly self-sustaining in energy and maintenance. Once up and running, RP can infinitely give back to the community as event space, classroom, community garden, outdoor movie theater, art gallery, and special events venue.
WHAT YOU GET /COMMUNITY BENEFITS
A collaborative place to have fun, fulfilling experiences! The R/P will be a place for you to see art, enjoy regular movie nights, attend special events, and learn a variety of skills from talented community members—all while keeping it country just minutes away from Hawaii’s most dynamic beaches.
An ongoing blog of progress will be updated daily so that supporters can see their donation being put to use. A video series during the fundraising campaign will allow people to see and learn about what we are building with a “How-to” series. Supporters will be able to see building plans, featured artists, and creators.
Larger donations will benefit from a partnership with R/P in which their personal name or company logo will be featured on the mobile art gallery bus that travels all over the island to events, schools and surf contests, the R/P website, and on R/P wearable merchandise.
Tell your friends, family, coworkers—anyone who might be interested in contributing to the dream.
