Red Snow 红雪
Inspired by the stories of survivors of the Rape of Nanking, the production marks the 75th anniversary of this forgotten holocaust of WWII. RED SNOW is a story of love and the struggle to reconcile the past with the present in the search for peace and healing. Isabel’s recurring nightmare of her grandparents’ favorite Chinese opera drives her to search for their silenced story. On her journey she falls in love with Jason, a man who is connected to the same forgotten holocaust. Their love unleashes three generations of guilt and pain perpetuated by a massacre still denied by the perpetrators today. When their lives collide they struggle to reconcile the past with the present - for themselves and their families, shaken from their lifelong silence by Isabel’s pilgrimage to uncover the secrets of her grandmother’s history ... and her own.

Red Snow had its world premiere at the Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, Canada, in January 2012. We are the only Canadian theatre company (among the ten countries chosen for 2012 festival) to be invited to the ACT Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival in November. This will be our international premiere, opening up opportunities for our thirteen artists and crew in a forum of artistic and cultural exchange. The ACT Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival was founded in Japan in 1999, to showcase theatre productions from across Asia. Since relocating to Shanghai, China, in 2005, the theatre festival's showcase has expanded internationally, to include Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Canada, and the United States. Shanghai is one of the major Asian cities for culture and the arts, drawing artists and audiences from around the world. Red Snow's international premiere presentation is especially important and poignant for both the production and the local Chinese audience, for the presentation of Red Show in China will commemorate the massacre and the horrors and the injustice committed in Nanjing in 1937.
Our contacts we will be making at the ACT Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival we give us opportunities in new collaborations and other presentation of Red Snow in other countries and other arts and theatre festivals.
As the ACT Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival will be covering only the accommodation and one meal per day for twelve production participants for four days during the Festival, we will need additional funds (up to $48,888) to cover the additional expenses for bringing the crew and cast of thirteen from Toronto to Shanghai, and for the crew and cast salaries, and for covering the meals and per diem expenses that are not covered by the Festival:
Return economy class airfares between Toronto and Shanghai for thirteen cast and crew members $15,600
Crew & cast salaries for one week rehearsal in Canada & one week in Shanghai $18,500
Rehearsal space rental $433
Per diem honoraria ($125/day/person abroad) $11,375
Taxi van of crew/cast/costumes/props in Toronto to airport and return $420
Extra baggage fees for transporting props and costumes $1,000
Travel insurance for thirteen crew and cast members ($60/person) $780
China visa fees ($50/person) $650
Rental of instruments in Shanghai (vibraphone/Chinese drum/African djembe)$130
Total expenses for Red Snow's participation at the ACT Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival: $48,888
The crew and cast of Red Snow will be most grateful for your support in our efforts to present Red Snow to the Chinese audiences, who with their shared history of this massacre and violence will no doubt be affected by the production's message of peace, healing and forgiveness. Please join us in supporting the presentation and the international dissemination of Red Snow. It takes a community to raise and to tell a story.
