I am a hobbyist poet looking to bring you quality poetry for free and without restriction, and given enough funding use the momentum from this project to bring some writer friends onboard. It will be great fun.
My first project, called "Red Rome", is a conceptual piece in progress, driven by narrative, powerful imagery, and stream of consciousness. It depicts a Roman plebeian c. 60 AD who, having surviving the persecution under Nero and the Great Fire of Rome, begins to rethink his spiritual apathy, all the while struggling with tyranny and the limits of his own manhood.
(from RED ROME)
Under that vapid humming---our wind,
(it lay soft music over us like hands
and cradled us until we fell asleep)
there was a scent like smoke rising
Out of a twilit sky (our sky)
but the valley sang still and the grass just wept.
And the lilies cast off yellow; they are beggars
idling for the rain to come again,
their arms extended and their bowl upright
to the hovering storm of wings
. who divide their fruit;
where does the stage end and the song begin,
that bees cannot make commerce with our skin
nor refuse the brilliant petals that coerce them
but I can stay my hand to take the sting?
After the fire just thought grows, spreading
up from the taciturn rock...some wild mans etching
then on some edifices walls as they stood black from burning-
filling the roofs and covering the chimneys, continuing.
A fish carried over rock and water, its body cuneiform.
WHY SUPPORT US?
Plainly, I want to bring you poetry like that which has not existed for decades. I want to rewrite the folded pages of your dull history book as a human narrative, an aesthetic principle. And Red Rome is just the start; with your help we can make waves in what appears to be a lifeless industry.
I want to bring back the feel of classics like Iron John and Spring and All and the great narrative poems of history. I want to prove inconclusively that painstakingly-crafted epic poetry is still more than a tired niche---that it is forever relevant---and that it is also a man's sport.
I'm glad you asked. With every cent you donate, and every time you share a link to my project page, you help fund the evangelization of Red Rome through social media and blog-specific advertisements, bringing the project more exposure. If we raise enough money with this, I may also consider hosting some sort of a virtual, mixed-media installment piece.
Every 15 USD that you donate will get you a physical copy of the volume. Give $60 and I'll add you to the preface. Donors who contribute $100 or more will also receive a print of custom concept art or fiction related to the story and created in their name. The top donor will be added as a minor character, similar to the way that Homer used to customize his work for the audience.
You will also be known to your peers as a patron of the fine arts.
