Rayn Josephine Marie Nigro was born on October 1, 1994. She has lived in Johnsonville NY for her entire life. She has attended Hoosic Valley schooling, where she has participated in many clubs and activities. She partakes in Foreign Language club, SADD, and she is part of the Yearbook staff.
Where Rayn's time was mostly spent, however, was being part of a sports team. Regardless of the season Rayn participated in a sport. During the fall it was Volleyball, where she would frequently be high scorer, and had the most kills. During the winter Rayn was part of the basketball team. During her junior year, her team worked hard and became the New York State Champions. Her free time during the Spring was occupied by the Hoosic Valley track and field team and field team. She was Wasaren League Champion for High Jump, but she also did Long Jump, Pole Vault, and Triple Jump.
This is Rayn's senior year of high school and the time to make decisions as to which school she will attend next fall was swiftly approaching. Upon the end of the Volleyball season, where Rayn's team lost in the semi-finals of the Sectional games, she was offered an athletic scholarship to SUNY Canton.
Rayn was unfamiliar with this college so she and her friend Tiffany scheduled a tour of the college. They skipped school and left for the college visit on November 28th planning to return on the next day, November 29th. During the visit she attended several Criminal Justice classes, got the tour of the campus, and played with the Girls Volley ball team.
When she awoke in the morning she and Tiffany packed up and got on the road to make it home in time for basketball practice that afternoon. On the way back Rayn got tired and allowed Tiffany to drive. She proceeded to nap while Tiffany continued to drive them home. When Rayn woke up she told Tiffany that she was alright to drive again, so she told Tiffany to get off at the next exit. As they were pulling off the exit ramp, they lost control of the vehicle and the car rolled onto its side, the car hit a guardrail and proceeded to roll down a hill, completing 8 rotations of the vehicle. A car driving the other direction saw the car rolling down the hill and immediately called the police while pulling a U-turn.
The first sheriff on the scene instantly knew that Rayn would need helicopter assistance to Albany Medical Center. She was rushed into the ER for an emergency CT Scan. It showed the Doctors that she had small amounts of bleeding on the brain. This is what made Rayn remain unconscious. She also had a break in the Right Clavicle, and a small fracture on the tip of her tail bone. Rayn spent the first night in the Neurological Observation unit. The next afternoon she was transported to the Trauma unit. After one or two good days the hospital wanted to release Rayn home. Several people, including Nurses (who will remain Nameless), did not think that Rayn was ready to be Discharged. Her brother Gage called the Brain Injury Association Of New York and hassled the people there to get Rayn into a Rehabilitation Center. That is where Rayn is now, at the SunnyView Rehabilitation Center.
What We Need
Seeing as the driver of the vehicle was Unlicensed and not covered by Rayn's insurance, the car insurance company is only willing to pay for up to $100,000. The break down that our family received of the pricing is as follows:
- Helicopter Ride: $150,000
- One night in the Neurological Obsevation Unit: $50,000
- Six days in Trauma @ $30,000 a day: $180,000
- Six shots of Morphine @$2,500 per shot: $15,000
This brings the total to $395,000, subtract the $100,000 from the insurance company and that $295,000. This doesn't include the transportation to the Rehab Center, the multiple X-rays and MRI's she received, the medications for nausea and pain on top of morphine, the rehabilitation center costs, or the months of therapy in the near future.
So as you can see this is a huge financial burden our family has taken on, and we are asking for help from friends, family, community members, anyone really. We are setting our goal to $50,000 for now, this is to avoid the fee's from this site, but in all reality we need much much more. Anything you or your families can do will help our family and it will be greatly appreciated. Please share this link to all social media sites and anywhere else you can think to post it. Our family appreciates anything you can do. Thanks
