The residents of East Baltimore need to have access to this book!
Dr. Marisela Gomez's forthcoming Race, Class, Power, and Organizing in East Baltimore: Rebuilding Abandoned Communities in America (Lexington Books) examines the history of displacement in a low-income, primarily African-American community dominated by the presence of a powerful institution: the John Hopkins Hospital. This campaign is going to make sure that Dr. Gomez's book can be read by the neighborhood whose story it tells. By donating to this campaign, you'll be helping us distribute free copies to neighborhood residents during monthly community meetings and annual East Baltimore gatherings.
Why we need your helpBecause Dr. Gomez's publisher primarily services the academic market, the initial release of this book will have a cover price that is going to put it out of the reach of most people's budget, let alone folks struggling to get by in East Baltimore. Thankfully, we've worked out a deal with the publisher to get copies at a substantial discount.
Other Ways You Can Help
Excited about this, but aren't flush with cash? We hear you—if you want to help, use the tools on this page to share the campaign—send it to your friends, your professors, your colleagues, your students! Tweet it and FB it! The more people who hear about this, the more likely it is that we'll meet our goal and be able to place the book order we're looking to do!
Why is Red Emma's doing this?
As a radical bookstore with a committment to social justice, this is right up our alley, and when Dr. Gomez asked for our help with raising money to make this book available in East Baltimore, we jumped at the chance. We want to clarify in case you were wondering: all money raised here will go towards buying books for East Baltimore and paying for the rewards. We're not making any profit on what gets collected.
