Short SummaryMy name is Evan Gilchrest Smith. I grew up in Clinton, Massachusetts and for the past three years I've been studying filmmaking out in Los Angeles, CA. The film you are helping me get made is my Senior thesis film. It's the film I need to complete in order to receive my diploma. It's a film that I want to make whether I'm graduating film school or not though. It's a personal story to me and I want to bring it to life and share it with others.
It's a story about a six year old boy. He is told by his father that the world is a very tough place to live in. In order to survive, his father tells him that he must capture that one moment of pure happiness, the "magic moment" so to speak, that he can always keep in his head and think about when things get rough.
That six year old boy is now sixty five - and he feels like he never got the "moment".
His name is Ernest and he is tormented by the memories of what he thinks is his failed life. He chain smokes and takes pills on a regimented basis to keep his anxiety at bay - But nothing stops the memories.
Ernest's ultimate remedy seems to present itself on a fateful visit to the doctor's office. This man who wants nothing more than to be rid of his plaguing memories, to be a blank-slate, is diagnosed with mid-level Alzheimer's disease. It is only a short time now before all his memories will disappear - forever.
We track Ernest over the period of a weekend as his memories take hold of him and he battles with his past to determine what will become of his future. This is a film about the essence of memories. How they effect our lives, how they are passed from generation to generation, and how, in the end, they may be the things that save our lives.
What We NeedI am filming this short film very soon. I need to have major filming done by the end of February. It is very important to me and to everyone who has been helping me put this film together so far that we secure these final funds in order to get this film made in the best way possible.
What the money will be used for:
ACTORS: This is a very character focused script. The lead role of Ernest is demanding, but there are equally important supporting roles as well. I want make sure that I can be open to paying these actors for their dedication to the film, and also for other related expenses such as transportation, filling paperwork, etc.
LOCATIONS: The locations are key right next to the actors for this short film. In addition to the present day locations there are also the places where Ernest's memories take place. Many of these places will require permits and money to secure.
CREW: Much of the crew will be coming from my film school. Their commitment to this project, giving up free hours to get it made, is something I could not make this film without. Some of the necessary crew members will be coming from out of school though, and these people will need to be paid for their services. A VERY important example of this is SOUND.
CATERING: This short film will be shot over the course of three to four days. They will be days filled with hard work and that hard work needs to be fueled by something other than pure creativity unfortunately. This is why we need food. And the stuff that actually makes people enjoy working after twelve hours on set is worth the money.
SUPER 8 FILM: A major piece of this short film is that I will be filming all of the memory sequences on Super 8mm film. 8mm has that unmistakable quality to it that instantly evokes the feeling of nostalgia. The grain, saturated colors, and texture of it simply can not be replicated. Film is expensive these days as more of the filmmaking world turns to digital. I believe that the quality Super 8 brings will be a huge boost to the storytelling of this film though. And I'm asking for your support to make it happen.
What You Get
In return for all of the hugely appreciated funds you donate to this film I am offering some rewards. These include DVD and BLU-RAY copies of the film. I feel like I have an obligation to myself, but also to you to make the best film that I can and you will receive a copy of it when it is finished. I am also offering Stand-Alone title cards, Limited Edition Posters, as well as an extra-special opportunity to have your memory or idea turned into an 8mm film!
And with any amount of money that is donated, whether it is for a reward amount, or it is a dollar or two, you get my thanks. I know film is a risky endeavor but you are trusting me and this project and by donating any amount of money it says that you want to see this film brought to the screen. And I thank you for that.
Other Ways You Can HelpPlease share this with everybody you know! Even if you can't donate, if you want to help, share this page!
Thank you for reading this far. I know it's a lot, but this is not just a film to me, it's the next piece of my journey as a filmmaker. After film school, after high school, after watching all those movies as a kid, I've come here. Help me take the next step.
