My Name Is Joe Cintron;
I'm a 47-year-old C4-C5 quadriplegic (paralyzed from the neck down).
I am writing this in the hope of receiving assistance in the form of a grant, gift or individual donationsorto acquire a (much needed) wheelchair van.
Allow me to share with you a little about myself. In 1981 I was a 16 year young junior at Norristown High School, in Norristown, Pennsylvania. I had dreams of going to college, playing football and if lucky, making it to the NFL.
I thought my life was great until on one tragic night in December of 1981, at a friend's party, I fell out of a 2nd floor window, suffering a broken neck.
For the last 30 years I've been living at home being taken care of by my mother. My mother has been here doing everything for me from the very beginning.
She has literally made me her life. She washes me, feeds me, and exercises me. You name it, my (single parent) mother does it.
The way we currently travel is by car. We require help by a family member or friend and the two become my personal lift.
With the car not being wheelchair accessible, it really is a task lifting, bending and maneuvering my body in and out of the car.
Well, with 30 years gone by, we both are older and I'm much heavier. It is really becoming a burden on my 66-year-old mother to constantly lift me.
After all she has done for me, I would love to be able to tell her, "Mom, we have a brand new wheelchair van!!!"
If there are folks out there who have it in their power to help my mother and me, we both would really appreciate it. Thank you for reading this and for any help you can offer.
