What Is This About?
I know puppy mills are evil. You know puppy mills are evil. It's time the whole world knows!
I am the creator (photographer & author) of The Photo Book Projects, a series of photo books designed to raise awareness about misunderstood and mistreated dogs. The first books were Deaf Dogs (my dog was born deaf), Rescued in America (on rescued dogs) and Pit Bulls & Pit Bull Type Dogs.
This book, Puppy Mill Survivors, will be the fourth book in the series and it is the most important. It is 2013 and still puppies are being bred in commercial puppy mills around the country. These dogs have very few rights legally. Many live in isolation, with no exercise, inadequate food, no veterinary care, no socialization, no emotional care and no playtime. Many have never been walked. Some live in cages so small that they can't even stand up straight. The wire-floor cages they are forced to stand on tear up the pads of their feet. The females are bred too frequently and their health suffers because of it. Once the breeder dogs are too old to be profitable to the mills' owners, they are disposed of, either killed or dropped off at a kill shelter.
This needs to change! This book will educate people about these mills and help people learn that they should NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store or an online breeder whose physical site they have never visted. More than 90% of dogs in pet stores are from puppy mills, and many online puppy sites get the dogs they sell from puppy mills, too, even when they say they don't. I want this book to get national press. It is time that things change for these dogs. Things NEED to change for these dogs.
Where Does the Money Go? What if We Don't Raise the Full Amount?
I produce high-quality photo books that are printed in the U.S. The books are FSC-certified and Rainforest Alliance certified. A percentage of the proceeds from book sales is donated to rescues around the country.
If all of the printing money is raised, the Puppy Mill book will be approximately 140-160 pages and will contain the stories and photos of 50 former puppy mill dogs who have now found their forever homes. THIS WILL NOT BE A SAD BOOK. This book will be full of HEARTWARMING stories of adorable dogs who have overcome the odds and found the perfect loving home they always deserved.
This is the FINAL ATTEMPT to raise this money. If the money isn't raised then the books will be printed online using a digital printing site such as blurb.com. I won't be able to sell the book in bookstores or on my website. In short, if the money isn't raised, this book won't have as big of an impact because we won't be able to get press coverage and not as many people will find and see the book.
So WE NEED TO RAISE THE MONEY to get these books printed ourselves in order for the book to have the impact it needs to have...in order for the dogs to get the help they need and deserve.
What Do You Get for Your Contribution?
The Impact & Donations to National Mill Dog Rescue
I raised enough money to print the Pit Bulls & Pit Bull Type Dogs photo book using Kickstarter.com. We can certainly raise enough here to get the Puppy Mill book printed! Let's do this!
PLUS, for every book pre-ordered, I will donate $1 to National Mill Dog Rescue.
