Punk Rock Big Year

Hello! And Welcome to the Indie Go-Go campaign for the post production of the birdwatching documentary “Punk Rock Big Year”.

My name is Paul Riss, I'm a father of two 4-year old twins, husband to a very busy and talented illustrator, full-time Associate Creative Director at an international advertising agency and part time freelance designer. I love punk rock, tattoos, and I’m an avid birdwatcher.

In 2011, I embarked on a year-long journey called a Big Year. What’s a Big Year? It’s when a birder spends 365 days attempting to see as many different bird species as possible in a pre-defined geographical area. My geographical constraint was Ontario, Canada. I kept a blog detailing my successes and failures. And there were many of both. To make things a bit more interesting, I also promised my followers that I would tattoo the Latin name of each and every bird species I saw throughout my Big Year! Crazy? Maybe, but it's not without purpose. I'm trying to destroy the myth that birding is just for when you retire and get a Tilley hat. I want a younger generation to understand that there are birders out there just like them and they should check out this most incredible pastime. Also, to make people aware of how fragile and important birds are to our natural environment.

How will your contribution help?

It’s been a challenging but fun Big Year! With the help of friends and coworkers, we’ve documented the entire process, and now, we’d love to finish the film. Many awesome people have agreed to donate some time to the project but post production costs money. I basically funded the filming myself. Yes, now I'm somewhat broke. Friends gave so much of their time traveling with me and filming the year. I feel I owe it to their efforts to finish this film.

We have countless hours of footage to go through, and without the help of a few post-production professionals, producing this doc would be impossible.

As a contributor to the campaign, your funds will be used for everything post production, from the review of the rushes down to the finishing of the locked pictures (fancy words for the final edit).
