Who We Are
Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Virginia has been the most trusted provider of affordable women's health care and honest, accurate sex education in Hampton Roads for close to 50 years. One of our main education programs involves comprehensive information sessions on reproductive health, birth control and STI/HIV prevention and testing with domestic violence survivors living in women's shelters across the community. Many of these women are uninsured and have gone way too long without a well-woman exam and breast and cervical cancer screening. We don't receive any state or federal assistance for clinical services and are unable to provide free services without grant or donor funding.
What We Need & What You Get
Our goal is to provide these women in desperate need of basic health care with free well-woman exams to ensure they are healthy as they embark on the next part of their lives. A well-woman visit at our health center typically costs around $150 and includes the exam and the lab work needed for cancer screening. While this is a fraction of the cost at a private provider, it's still difficult for many women living in shelters to pay. We would like to raise $5,000 to provide exams and cancer screening to at least 25 women in desperate need of this care. The total will also assist women who may need a follow-up screening or further care for an abnormal result.
If you contribute to this campaign, you can feel secure in knowing you may have saved someone's life; and at the very least, you have given an underserved, vulnerable woman a better chance at a healthy, happy future.
Unfortunately, the state does not provide the type of safety net that so many domestic violence survivors and homeless women living in shelters need to help them successfully move on with their lives. We would like to offer these women a safe, confidential, personal environment to receive health care, something that may be traumatic after a violent experience. We feel that these women have been through enough pain and the least we can do is provide them with a basic health screening to allow them peace of mind and the ability to start fresh. Many of these women have children; they need to remain healthy and able to care for them.
