We are anxious and sometimes overwhelmed about the future of our planet. Climate change and the many complications it brings will exacerbate suffering and inequality all over the world. We are dissatisfied and with the options before us because we are motivated to do the MOST good we possibly can, and nothing seems like enough. These issues are vast, complicated, and scary, and they affect all of us.
However, we feel absolutely compelled to do something important. We are offering a year of our lives to learn as much as we can about how to prepare for the future. We want to help others, and share our experiences for the benefit of everyone. Therein lies our motivaton for this trip. To learn, to give, and to share, in the hopes of inspiring and empowering ourselves and others to be agents of positive change.
For years, we have learned about complicated and distressing global problems. We do not believe our modern way of life will sustain us through the tough times ahead.
However, we do believe a better future is possible. Our journey will allow us to connect with inspiring people and communities who are practicing innovative solutions and share their stories.
UPDATE 8/16: We've been published! Check it out: LoaTree blog post
UPDATE 8/17: It is important to us that our journey be as low impact as possible, which is why we set out to fund raise with the intention of purchasing a vehicle that we could both live in and power on biodiesel. It has become clear that a more economical option would be to borrow or rent a van or camper truck that would meet these needs.
We are still searching for the perfect biodiesel vehicle! We have simply shifted our intention to renting said vehicle rather than outright purchasing. Let us know if you know of anything that would work for us!
As recent graduates of the Environmental Studies program at UC Santa Barbara, we are very concerned about the state of our world and the future, and deeply motivated to create positive change.
From September to December, we will travel around the Northern half of the United States, exploring and volunteering in alternative living spaces, like co-ops, intentional communities, and community-building organizations. We believe these spaces will display resilience; the ability to remain strong, functional, and happy in the face of extreme hardship. If all goes well, we will do a second leg through the south in the spring.
Our potential route
On our website we will showcase communities and individuals thriving in alternative lifestyles. We will ask people about what sustainability, community, and resilience against climate change mean to them, and learn how to prepare for the future.
-- A journey of Learning, Giving, and Sharing
We will LEARN what a resilient community looks like by asking these questions and more:
- Does climate change concern you?
- What is special about your lifestyle and community?
- What does community resiliency mean to you?
- What inspired you to live this way?
- What can other people take away from the way you live?
We are still expanding this list. What sort of questions would you like answered?
Cornerstone Farm in Maine, one of the stops we will make along the way
We will GIVE
In every state we visit, we will volunteer and offer whatever we can.
- Working on farms and in co-ops
- Helping out in shelters
- Whatever else is needed on www.workaway.info
- a wonderful resource to find places to help out around the country
Additionally, we will be offering what we learn with our followers as we go.
Please let us know if you have any other suggestions!
We will SHARE what it takes to make a community resilient.
Our lessons will help others make changes in their lives and their communities to be better prepared for the future.
How we will share:
- Constantly feature the stories of incredible individuals and communities nationwide on our blog
- Create a map highlighting sustainability players around the country
- Develop a book or short documentary available online highlighting the stories we collect and our insights
No one can solve global problems alone, and our final product will be a resource to those hoping to create a brighter future.
How you can help us make a difference
Our greatest need is for a vehicle!
A vehicle like this one would give us the most flexibility to fulfill our dreams.
We hope to purchase a used diesel vehicle, like a Westfalia or camper truck, to run on biodiesel. This vehicle will be our home all over the country, so we are looking for something reliable. We will also need funds for fuel, food, and supplies.
An estimated breakdown:
$7,000-$10,000 for the vehicle
(based on available options on Craigslist)
$1,500-$2,000 for sustainable food
$2,000 for biodiesel
(Roughly 8,000 miles at about 17 MPG at an average of $4.10/gal)
= $10,500- $14,000
You might ask, given this breakdown, why we set our fundraising limit at $8,000? We are certainly hoping to raise well over $10,000, but will recieve a higher percentage of the money we raise from Indiegogo if we meet our goal. Also, we are determined to make it work with whatever money we manage to fundraise.
Thankfully, biodiesel is available all over the country! It will take some careful planning and some extra fuel tanks to make sure we never get stranded, but we are up for the challenge.
