Thank you everyone! What an amazing 30 days! Your support has been so incredible. Thank you for helping me get past the red tape. Now it's time to make some pillows!
Pre-orders are still available. Pre-order here.
Wow! Thank you everyone who has visited from TheBlaze.com. Good article, huh? I appreciate you getting behind my cause. It has been amazing to see how many people have rallied behind me me. Thank you!
From some of the comments on the article, I realized there are a few questions I should address!
When will I get my pillow? Early Backer pillows will ship within a week of the campaign end date (ship by Aug. 21 at the latest.) All other pillows will ship within 4-6 weeks. I am in conversation with my (US based!) manufacturer now to finalize some details. I'll keep posting information as I learn more.
Keep the questions coming! I'll keep answering!
Thanks again for your support! I'm overwhelmed with gratitude.

The Pillow Tag Story
I invented a maternity support pillow when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was ready to launch my business and start selling pillows via the internet when I hit a major roadblock.
You know that tag hanging off the side of your pillow that says "Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law"? In order for me sell a pillow available in all 50 states, I have to pay thousands of dollars in pillow tag registration fees.
For the first year, it's $4,460 just to be allowed to sell a pillow.
That's why I need your help. I am pre-selling BellyRest Maternity Support Pillows to raise the funds necessary to pay for the pillow tag fees.
The Pillow Story - Discomfort is the Other Mother of Invention
When you're pregnant you tend to sleep worse and worse every night as your pregnancy progresses. (See graph.)
I refused to buy a huge body pillow because my husband already took up enough room in bed. I was using a small sofa pillow and jamming it under my belly all night long as I rolled from side to side. Every time I'd roll or change positions, I would wake up, readjust my pillow, wake up my husband, realize I had to go to the bathroom, get back in bed, notice that the baby is now awake and practicing Kung-Fu, try to fall asleep, and do it all over again in an hour or two.
One day, when I was feeling particularly tired of being tired, I thought, "What if I took this pillow, cut it in half, and attached the two pillows with a piece of fabric in the middle so that I'd have a pillow waiting for me on the other side?"
I slept better immediately. The pillows stayed in place when I rolled over, and it hardly took up any real estate in bed. Plus, I found that having a pillow behind me and in front of me supported my lower back and my belly at the same time, reducing my hip pain. It's not rocket science, but to a pregnant woman who isn't sleeping, it's life changing.
Over the past two years, I have made 14 functional prototypes tested by nine pregnant women in all stages of pregnancy. The top of the pillow is covered in satin for smooth rolling from side to side, and there is cotton on the bottom so it stays in place. It is the only adjustable and small maternity pillow available.
- 100% cotton bottom, 100% polyester satin top, 100% polyester filling
- Two 8.5 inch x 12 inch pillows with an 8.5 inch connecting flap (21.6 cm x 30.5 cm, 21.6 cm connecting flap)
- Adjustable width
- Fits in your carry-on luggage (each pillow is roughly the dimensions of a piece of paper plus some height from stuffing!)
- Machine washable (tumble dry low)
- Made in the USA
Women who have used BellyRest reported that it helped to:
- Reduce low back pain
- Reduce hip pain
- Reduce sciatica nerve pain
- Improve sleep
It’s Not Just Another Pillow...
No rocket science here, it's just a pillow. But it’s a small maternity pillow that actually works. Most maternity pillows are huge, ugly, and one size fits all. BellyRest will be the first widely available pillow that is small, pretty, and adjustable. BellyRest aims to change the ugly, frumpy, gigantic pillow stereotype with a small, functional and even glamorous pillow. The two pillows connect with a specialized polyester and Velcro® combination that is unique to BellyRest.
Where Does Belly Rest Come From?
Currently, I am making BellyRest pillows in my home sewing studio with the help of my Mom (Thank you Mom!) While we have great equipment, we can only sew a limited number of pillows because we don’t have the capacity to cut large quantities of fabric or sew as quickly as a specialist could in a manufacturing facility. Also, because I have to pay for the pillow tag registration fees up front, I need to produce and sell a higher quantity of pillows initially to cover the first year of annual fees.
I have a soft-goods manufacturing partner standing by ready to begin production of BellyRest as soon as the funding goal is met. We have talked through the specifications of my project and I have received a quote to get started.
BellyRest will be manufactured in the USA. I was able to find a company that is not only in the US, but within an hour’s drive from my State College, PA home, which means BellyRest will also benefit my local economy.
The manufacturing company will be Eqinox Ltd., located in Williamsport, PA.

Why Does BellyRest Need My Pledge?
Getting a quality product out to market isn’t cheap. I want to make BellyRest widely available. That's why I'm reaching out to you via IndieGoGo. BellyRest is made of high-end designer cotton and a durable and luxurious satin. Continuing to sew at my in-home studio is not a viable option for long-term success. BellyRest needs to be available on a larger scale and that can only be accomplished with a manufacturing partner, and none of this can happen until I can cover the pillow tag registration fees.
It Really Costs THAT Much for Pillow Tags?
Unfortunately, yes. After I finalized my working prototype, I discovered that I would be required to pay annual pillow tag registration fees. Blah. 15 states require law tags on pillows. So that means I can't sell BellyRest on a site like Amazon that ships to all 50 states, unless I pay the annual registration fees in those 15 states that require law tags. State pillow tag registration fees range from $5 - $720 per year. It's $3,360 for the first year, then another $1,000 in filing fees.
Total: $4,660 the first year. I got so mad that I wrote a rap about it. (Hence the pillow tag themed rewards and music video.)
Who Is BellyRest?
My name is Kerri Smith (a.k.a. KDiggy from the video), and I’m the inventor of BellyRest. My first business was a local, online wedding directory (and the first of its kind in my hometown). I ran the business for five years, then sold it just before my daughter was born.
My husband handles the BellyRest website and all things technical. My Mom taught me how to sew and helps construct the pillows. (Thanks, Mom!!!) And my accountant has been warned and is ready to do my taxes!
A soft-goods manufacturer, Equinox Ltd., will become part of the team as a result of this crowdfunding campaign.
How Does IndieGoGo Work?
If I don't make my funding goal, I don't get any of the money (and pregnant women don't get pillows). It's all or nothing. When you make a contribution, IndieGoGo uses your PayPal account (or credit card) to hold the money until I meet my funding goal. That’s also why I can’t deliver pillows the moment you make a contribution. (Sorry, I wish I could!) I don't get the money until I meet my goal.
When Will I Get My Pillow?
Early Backer Pillows (black and white design as seen in the reward photos) will ship within a week of the campaign end date. The Early Backer Pillows are already in stock. If you are currently pregnant and uncomfortable, this is the best way to get a pillow quickly. The quantity is limited.
The other pillows will be made at the sewing factory I mentioned above. I will place my first order as soon as my funding goal is met. I want production to begin as soon as possible so the pillows can ship quickly after the campaign end date. It will take 1-2 weeks to finalize the production floor working prototype and complete the first production test run. It will take 3-4 weeks for a full order to be complete. I know that my prego homies don’t have a lot of patience. I will be ready to begin production right away!
They will manufacture the black/white design pillows and the semi-custom pillows (with the three fabric choices). The Totally Custom pillows will be made at my home sewing studio.
Because I will start manufacturing as soon as my funding goal is met, your pillow should ship 4-6 weeks after the campaign end date.
In addition to the "Thank You Rap," you get a Totally Custom Pillow (or regular or choose-a-color, whichever you prefer), 4 bags, 10 bumper stickers and the mp3. And you get to keep the pillow tag shirt!
Free shipping worldwide on all rewards.
All pillows also include your very own pillow tag, which we encourage you to cut off. You are the consumer, after all!
Thank you for supporting BellyRest. Pregnant women will sleep better because of you. I appreciate your help very much!
Items of Note:
- *Fabric selection for any pillows may change due to fabric availability at the time of sewing.
- Totally custom orders may take longer to fulfill due to fabric availability and order lead time.

- REUSABLE BAG NOTE: 8/8/12 - I have found a new manufacturer for the reusable bag. I realized that although the previous bag maker printed their bags in the US, the bags themselves were made in China. I have found a US based manufacturer and they will be making the bags for me. I'm not sure on the exact size yet, but it will be big enough to be practical and tote around your pillow! Thanks again!
