We will open a Pop-Up Repair shop in Inwood, Manhattan, and for four weeks we will see what people want fixed, and whether we can fix it! The shop is the pilot program for a larger project aimed at breaking the cycle of use-and-discard consumer goods.
The shop will be staffed by theatre artisans. In theatre, we make things by hand, one at a time. We will apply these skills to real-world challenges - the broken stuff that would otherwise be thrown away. As designers, technicians, and craftsmen, Pop-up Repair is a chance to effect social change not only with the theatre we make, but with the way we make theatre - by hand.
We will be focussing on household objects - lamps, chairs, kitchen stuff, small electronics, bags, etc. But we will do our best on anything you bring in (no house calls in this first phase). The first few customers will be "pay what you will," and from then on we will charge a reasonable fee (this is part of the experiment, to learn whether and how much people will pay). Any money we earn from the shop will go into starting the next phase of the project - more on that later!
Your Indiegogo dollars will get us started by paying for: a workspace for 4 weeks, payment for the theatre artisans/repair wizards, materials to work with, and other basic supplies.
Please come by the shop - and bring your broken stuff!
