Polar Bear Alley
Polar Bear Alley is the name of my blog/journal about my life in Churchill. I own a cabin 15 miles east of Churchill, right in bear country. Each bear season (October and November), I write the blog live from Churchill, Manitoba... www.polarbearalley.com
This year, I am finally sitting down to write my stories about 13 years in polar bear country. Over the years, I have had polar bears break in to my cabin, steal laundry from my truck, eat my couch and sleep in my yard. I have two dogs who were trained to chase polar bears - which is actually a lot more fun than it sounds - and slept with a loaded gun beside the bed (still do actually).
Polar Bear Alley (the book) touches on life along Hudson Bay... all the basics are covered: how to live in polar bear country without being eaten, what to do with a drunk polar bear, how to steal a tundra buggy and how to shoot a polar bear in the toe.
There are a few northern stories thrown in for good measure... chasing the Hudson Bay Quest dogsled race, camping on the floe edge on Baffin Island, swimming with beluga whales and how not to buy moldy cheese in the north.

The Funding Drive
The easiest way to lend support for Polar Bear Alley is to simply pre-purchase my book for only $25!!! just click on the 'Perk' to the right or contribute at the bottom of the page!
This funding drive would cover the cost of printing and shipping (not small when you need books shipped to Hudson Bay...) - if the goal is not met, I plan to do a smaller run just for campaign supporters.
Part of the Perks! Original Artwork & Prints
Through 'bear season' (October and November), I divide my time between polar bear security contracts for film crews (I am the guy that carries the gun while they film) and a somewhat safer career as an artist (I paint while bears walk around outside...)I have included prints and original artwork as part of the incentives in this project. If you contribute $50, you will also receive a 5x7 print (valued at $35) of either of the paintings below. For $100, you will receive a signed, limited edition print- 12"x16" Takujait or 12x12" of Magic Hour.
Takujait (He Sees) - 12x16 limited edition print (available with $100 contribution)
Magic Hour - 12"x12" limited edition print (available with $100 contribution)
Polar Bear Paintings - Made in Churchill, Manitoba!
For a larger contribution, you can also receive an original painting from Churchill, Manitoba. Through October and November, I will produce ten polar bear portraits (of real bears from 2012 bear season) - for $500, pick your favourite 16x20 polar bear portrait plus receive that original painting along with your new polar bear book!!!
For $1500, you will receive your choice of five 3'x3' polar bear paintings... plus the new book and polar bear blog. My cabin in Camp Nanuq is a special place that really inspires... you won't be disappointed! The work above is very much in my style, its a bit northern impressionist... lots of colour, lots of life.
So it's pretty much... Buy a painting and get a book or buy a book and get a painting! Not many people can say they have a polar bear painting from Churchill... let alone one painted while a polar bear was at the window...
At the very least, check out how the bears are doing this year at www.polarbearalley.com They are fantastic creatures and Churchill is a pretty amazing place.
