The Beginning of Our Center:
My name is Lisa Larson, and I’m the director and founder of Pacific Trauma Specialists. After seven years in private practice doing cognitive-behavioral, or “talk” therapy, I suffered an experience that changed the course of my life and the way I do therapy. I flat lined (or clinically died) in 2005 from an allergic reaction. Three weeks later my son flat lined from a different allergic reaction. I was acutely traumatized. I could not eat, sleep, had anxiety and panic disorder, was restless, hyper-vigilant, and terrified that one of my children would die. I had a classic case of PTSD. No amount of talk therapy worked. But two sessions of EMDR, (a powerful trauma modality developed and rigorously researched at Stanford University) and I was back to my regular self.
A dream or a calling was born. I was determined to do something about the unnecessary physical, emotional, mental and spiritual torment of the emotionally traumatized. I have become passionate about letting the world know that trauma and PTSD are not something you have to live with. More than anything, I do not want anyone to be denied this trauma healing based on their inability to pay for therapy. This is when Pacific Trauma Specialists became a reality and not just a dream.
What We Do:
In early summer of 2012, we formed a nonprofit, public benefit corporation called Pacific Trauma Specialists. (PTS) We offer outstanding individual, couples, and family counseling and provide the most cutting edge trauma therapies to heal those who have been traumatized emotionally in our community. Our mission is to treat anyone who is suffering, regardless of income or ability to pay.
We are seeing great success in our clients. A woman who could not drive (because of a trauma) is back on the road. Parents who have lost children want to live again. Survivors of suicide can see their loved ones whole again instead of being tortured by the image of their death.
Last week a woman called who had a suicidal husband, a lost job and home, as well as a long trauma history. She had no money for gas to even drive to our Center. We were able to send a therapist to her to serve both her and her husband.
We have been treating children, adolescents, and adults who have been raped, sexually or physically assaulted, teens sold into sexual trafficking, victims of domestic violence, suicide survivors, traumatized veterans and those who have lost loved ones tragically. Even with these severe traumas, our clients have been able to find healing. Each day we watch as our clients transform their lives, and we want to continue to foster that growth and transformation.
We Need Your Help:
Despite mounting costs and the great demand for help from low-income families, we are fortunate not to have turned a single soul away from the healing offered at PTS. We are at risk of losing our dream to treat everyone who comes to us with suffering. Without funding support, we would be forced to turn patients away.
Every dollar donated goes directly to those who cannot afford treatment. All traumatized individuals deserve to heal - not just those who are fortunate enough to have money. Many of the most severely traumatized are unable to work. With proper trauma treatment they can become functional in the workplace and their lives.
