Update February 7, 2013:
Writers: Check out the new perk. I'll give you an in-depth critique of a short story, plus you'll get a year's subscription to the anthologies. It doesn't have to be a mystery story, either!
Update February 1, 2013:
Hi, Crime City Central listeners! Please look around and I hope you'll support Plan B. There are lots of reasons for crime fiction fans to contribute. In fact, one good reason per week starting in March.
As a taste of things to come, I've posted the first Plan B story a little early. Go ahead and read the deliciously dangerous The Way to a Man's Heart by Gary Cahill.
The Brass Tacks
Plan B is a new short fiction magazine, devoted to all things mysterious, criminal, thrilling and suspenseful.
Beginning in March 2013, we intend to post one short story per week, available to read online for free. Quarterly DRM-free ebook anthologies will be made available to purchase, as well as an annual ebook subscription. These are available to IndieGoGo contributors as pre-order perks.
IndieGoGo contributors may also choose paperback copies of the anthologies. These will be available as perks for a limited number of contributors and will be available only through this campaign.
What's With the Dough?
We believe that quality fiction deserves to be compensated and that’s where you come in. Plan B will be a paying market, and this campaign is in support of paying our authors. All the funds raised in this campaign, beyond paying IndieGoGo fees and supplying perks, will be used to pay our authors and artists.
Should this campaign exceed its goal, our pay rates will increase. It’s that simple.
The Nuts and Bolts
This campaign is structured to pay our authors a semi-pro rate of 1¢ USD per word. We would love to raise enough to pay more, but 1¢/word is a realistic starting goal. We will pay our cover artists a flat rate of $30.
There are currently only a handful of semi-pro or higher paying markets for straight mystery stories. We believe that there are great stories just waiting for an opportunity to be read, and Plan B wants to bring them to you.
For Mystery Fans
Plan B is geared to be the go-to site for new mystery and crime fiction. A new free story to read each week, plus all the stories from each quarter collected into an inexpensive ebook anthology. That’s 13 stories in each anthology - a novel’s worth of reading for a very reasonable price.
Expect to find a wide range of stories on Plan B - detectives, crime, thrillers, suspense, mysteries, cop tales... from classic cozies to hardboiled noir to modern technothrillers. We want stories from diverse voices, so expect a wide range of tales.
For Mystery Writers
Unlike some other genres, there are only a few paying markets out there for mystery stories, and many of those don’t cater specifically to mystery and crime.
At Plan B, we want to see work from writers from around the world and we think readers want more global diversity, too. Accepting electronic submissions is the only way to make a publication truly open to global voices, but there are few mystery publications which have moved into the 21st century.
According to Duotrope (as of December 12, 2012) there were only three dedicated mystery markets paying semi-pro rates or higher that accept electronic submissions and Plan B is one of them.
