The devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March 2011 created major long-lasting disruptions to every facet of the daily lives of people, including potters in the town of Kasama. Located in Ibaragi Prefecture, Kasama has a long history of ceramic-making dating from the 1700s, and is one of the most important art and craft centers in eastern Japan. The March 2011 earthquake was especially heartbreaking for this small town as kilns and ceramics were destroyed, devastating livelihoods in just a matter of moments. In immediate attempts to repair the kilns, the aftershocks weakened the same havoc several times over. The Kasama potters are still recovering from the devastation.

The Craft of the Kasama Community
After the March 2011 earthquake, the potter community of Kasama has constantly struggled to rebuild and retain its artform and livelihood. A hand-made ceramic from Kasama carries life in it. It safeguards the art and history of the potter craft, and provides a way of living with family, creative expression, and livelihoods made with nature.
In November 2011, our filmmaking team from Hawai‘i traveled to Kasama, Japan, to document the devastation and story of the Kasama Potters. We used our own funds and resources, including the help of our friends. The result is a short film that we are titling Place of Hope—The Kasama Potters Community and the Great Ordeal!
About the Film
Place of Hope—The Kasama Potters Community and the Great Ordeal!
Our will film focus on Akio Nukaga, a Kasama potter who spearheads a movement to bring potters together to rebuild and rejuvenate Kasama and its rich ceramic-making heritage. Under the banner of “Save Kasama”, the movement is reaching beyond Kasama to nearby towns as people join together in ways they had not done before and voluntarily help each other to recover from the devastation of the March 2011 earthquake. Saving Kasama represents more than just the recovery of a local economy. In recent years, new generations of people had began coming to Kasama with a spirit of revitalizing declining rural regions of Japan through ceramics and related arts and crafts. In this way, saving Kasama represents hope for all of Japan to sustain strong communities and family lives and livelihoods in the country’s post-industrial age.
Give and Receive
The short film that we are in the process of finishing will help raise awareness of the affected livelihood of potters in Kasama, Japan. In order to complete the film, we will need funds for hard drives, post production editing, DVD design and packaging, developing and repurposing the film for academic use, and website development.
The total cost of making of this film is $40,000 including preproduction, research, travel, equipment and labor. With your help, we can complete the film, pay our crew, make DVDs, put up a website and create academic material. Furthermore, in the spirit of this good cause, we will share a portion of all proceeds directly with the Save Kasama Potters foundation! Help us to make it happen.

The Stroke of Community Spirit
The Hawaii Senior Life Enrichment Association has graciously given our team some space at the 18th Annual Honolulu Festival / 2012 Japan Hawaii Culture Expo in the Hawai‘i Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. The festival and expo will take place on the weekend of March 3-4, 2012, where we will premiere our film, Place of Hope—The Kasama Potters Community and the Great Ordeal!
The festival and expo will be our chance to commemorate the anniversary of the disaster in Japan, bring awareness to a community of Japanese potters, and mostly to celebrate the art of hand-made ceramics and pottery in a philanthropic spirit. With momentum building, potters from Kasama and Hawai‘i have agreed to participate in these events!
With your support on IndieGoGo and at the events, we can help the Kasama potters rebuild their kilns, their lives, and their craft.
