Penny's Story

My partner and I adopted Penny, a (now 2 year old) pitbull and catahoula hound mix, from Sean Casey Animal Rescue (SCAR) on Memorial Day of 2012.  In February of 2013, we found out that not only does she have arthritis in her two front legs, but that she has two torn ACLs in her hind legs, which means we need two (possibly four) very expensive surgeries.  As a nanny and a food service employee, we cannot afford these surgeries on our own.   Her torn ligiments have a big impact on her abilities to run, jump, and explore Prospect Park off leash (which is maybe her favorite thing to do).  Right now, we only plan to get her two hind legs fixed, and deal with her arthritis using homeopathic methods.

Your contributions will help Penny run, sit, go down stairs, wrestle, and do all the things this 2 year old eternal puppy loves to do, because as of now she's tentative down stairs, limps, and can hardly sit without being uncomfortable.  We want to be able to give our dog a long happy life with us, which is why we are asking for financial help we cannot provide on our own.

The Story of Penny's Golden Legs

We went to VERG and met with Dr. Prata, who told us that each hind leg would cost about 3,800 for surgery alone, which does not include the cost of medicine, x-rays (the one we paid for during diagnosis at another vet cost $383), and aftercare.  So, that is about 4,000/each for her two hind legs alone.  Which is why we are asking for what seems like a very big amount, at least to me.  I assure you, when he told us cost, our hearts sank.  This dog has changed our lives, and we want to be able to change hers, too.  Even though she pulls my arms out of their sockets on walks, chewed on the cord to our new electric blanket, hogs the entire bed, and squeaks toys at 7am, she's here to stay.  We want to show her the meaning of unconditional love.  We've also been thinking of looking at other surgeons out of state (because it is oftentimes still cheaper in other states, even with travel expenses) and are concerned that there may even be left over funds, but if there are, we plan to donate them all back to the place that helped bring Penny into our home, Sean Casey Animal Rescue.
