We've made it to $8.5K!! This is our minimum goal. See below for why we would love to get to $11K!
NY-based Parijat Desai Dance Company performs a blend of Indian classical and Western contemporary dance. Were raising funds for our first-ever tour of India! During September 2011, well be performing in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai. We're being presented by The Park's New Festival, produced by Prakriti Foundation and Park Hotels. This is an international festival presenting contemporary artists in different disciplines, from India and abroad. Were taking 5 Dancers AND our Lighting Designer/Stage Manager to present Make Space and Songs To Live For, both created my residencies ('09-10 and '10-11) at Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
Why Go?
PDDC is a rare voice in dance uniquely grounded in both Indian classical and American modern dance. Because of the growing interest in contemporary dance in India, it's an exciting time to go. Dance is a means to build connections and understanding between people, and The New Festival includes performances, lecture/demos, and workshops so well get to share our work, and dialogue with audiences/artists across India. Also, India's a happening place. We're excited for collaborations that come through this tour. And were confident this tour will help us raise our profile at home in the U.S.
What We Get, Need, and Can Give You
The New Festival is generously covering all domestic travel, hotel, and food, and providing performance fees (in Rs). Between festival fees and funds PDDC has already raised, we are close to affording our international tickets. So we are definitely going!
But! There are significant costs yet to handle: We need to raise a minimum of $8.5K toward remaining airfare; visa costs; studio rental, tour lighting design, audio recordings, and visual elements; promotion; andmost importantlydancer pay.
Our talented,
dedicated, and, well, kick-ass dancers are rehearsing fiercely. These
artists work jobs that allow them to rehearse for several daytime
hours (read: they aint rich), and theyll be leaving those jobs for 1
month+ in order to tour. Since the economy does not remunerate most dance labor, as a
community, we must find a way to reward dancers' contributions to our collective well-being...
To thank you for your help, we've come up with some fun, beautiful gifts including photographs of PDDC, DVDs, invite-only rehearsals, tote bags, and even original paintings.
$8.5K is our minimum. The festival will give $5K, and we've already raised $4K. With $11K from this campaign, we can come closer to our total budget of $24K:
