One World Cup : post-production funding

A documentary capturing one of the the most multicultural cities in the world as the biggest championship in sports is happening a world away.

hi everybody my name is Daniel Hicks and I am making a documentary called One World Cup

'One World Cup' is a feature length documentary that will take you through a cultural melting pot while the biggest championship in the world, the World Cup of soccer, is happening on the other side of the planet. It is a film that takes a fresh approach to diversity, global issues and modern, urban society through the perspective of an enormously popular sport with a reputation for bringing people together... and keeping them apart.

Director/Producer Daniel Hicks

I'm a big soccer fan (football, whatever) and I'm a musician but most of all I'm a filmmaker. This documentary was just an idea for years before making it became a reality. Now its about time I start showing the world, my first feature length movie! Please take a look at some of my other photography and video work featured on my website.

A few years ago I started thinking of ways of making a documentary about a huge event like the World Cup of soccer, something that would show the entire global phenomena that exists around this amazing event but from a different point of view. I had already heard a lot about what it is like in Toronto during the World Cup, it is an extremely multicultural city after all, it seemed like fantastic subject matter and the perfect opportunity to make an interesting and entertaining film.

I went out on a limb to shoot it in 2010 and I think I captured something pretty special and unique. Many people have helped in many different ways already but I can't finish it by myself, that's why I'd like YOU to help me finish this documentary!

Stay in touch...

Whatever happens with the film over the long run I would like to bring you guys along for the ride! You will be big a part of getting this movie on the screen so I will not forget you. All contributors will be kept up to date on what is happening with the documentary and as a sincere gesture of thanks I'll snail mail you a POST CARD featuring the art I make for the film, personalized and signed. You never know I might send them from where ever this documentary takes me!

I hope you will be proud to be apart of this documentary so I will also create a special area on the official website dedicated to you guys, listing your names and even a link of your choosing if you'd like.

1$ or more- It would be really cool if you could contribute to this production! The least I could do is send you a small postcard souvenir of my thanks and mention you on the website.

25$ - As a filmmaker my main goal is for people such as yourself to see my work so for this small amount not only will your HD digital copy be reserved you will become a part of this documentary in a much more meaningful way.

100$ - This contribution can really go a long way. I will provide you with access to information about the production's progress and exclusive previews of the finished film. These previews won't be promotional videos but a specially produced inside look at the finished film. You of coarse will be given a HD digital copy of your own and your name will be prominently displayed in the main credits of the film.

The more we can raise the better this documentary will be.

We must reach the funding goal for the documentary to be funded! If it does not succeed your money will be returned and I will have to start again or look into other options for financing. So remember, the donation amounts above and on the right are just suggested amounts, if you'd like to contribute at the 25$ level why not round it up to 30$? That 5$ can be a big help reaching the funding goal.

100% of the money generated through this funding campaign is going straight into the post-production and distribution of the documentary.

Actually subtract Indiegogo's fair share and transaction fees it is a little less than 100% but it will still be everything!

  • Obviously the documentary is already shot and that is a huge phase done and over with. The largest portion of the proceeds will go towards the process of bringing it through post-production to master. The sound and music needs to be professionally mixed, the video needs to be color corrected and mastered. There is also a few other technical expenses that need to be covered but all of this is necessary to make the movie look and sound as amazing as it should.
  • Did I mentioned I was a musician? All the music in the videos was produced and composed by myself. Some of the money will go towards producing the original motion picture soundtrack. I'm looking into a range of international sounds and instruments and recording real musicians to make it sound truly alive.
  • Your contribution can help get 'One World Cup' screened around the world. Film festivals are not only great places to generate exposure for the film and can lead to bigger opportunities for it. However to simply have it considered for programming it can cost on average a $100 fee for a feature length production. Finishing this film is one expense, submitting it to as many festivals as I'd like it to be in is another.
  • Marketing materials, web hosting/video delivery and a certain amount of overhead expenses will be factored in.

Considering post-production costs this is still only a small amount to work with but I am very capable of doing a lot with just a little. I took it this far didn't I?

There is the possibility that even if this succeeds I will pursue another funding campaign to help finance further finishing and distribution but we'll see. In this event I will look into upgrading your status for being on board at this earlier phase.

This documentary won't not be made.

In other words it will be made some how, some way, no matter what. A LOT will happen with this production very quickly so... this is a good thing I hope.

What will happen? This documentary will be fully edited, it will have a musical score produced for it, it will be finalised and mastered. I will be submitting it to a number of international film festivals and trying to promote it as much possible in whatever means are available. You can help with that!

I will have a better idea of what is happening with screenings and the delivery of your digital copy in early 2013 . You guys will be the first to know all developments.

I don't need your money but I do need you to help me show the world!

Some things anyone can do is help get the word out, show the trailers to people you think would be interested. Like it on Facebook. Check the Tumblr out, I've been keeping a blog about what I'm doing since I started.

If anybody has any questions or comments whatsoever please use the comments form here on Indiegogo or send a message anytime to : emaildanielhicks@gmail.com

A big thanks to Dexter Calleja for helping to shoot the documentary and some promotional video. He's a talented photographer and filmmaker currently studying TV/film production at Sheridan College.
