Each winter, student athletes around the capital region gather for a flag football tournament at the Halfmoon Sports Complex in Clifton Park. Started by members of the Niskayuna Class of 2009, and mainly composed of recent Niskayuna, Guilderland and Shaker alumni, the event has served as an unofficial high school reunion and yearly celebration of section 2 athletics.
This year, the tournament has taken on a new meaning for all of us, given the recent tragedy involving the death of two high school students. Seeing as the tournament serves to unite students from all over the capital region, it is our goal to use it as a platform for something positive in this time of sadness.
We would like to play out the tournament in the honor of those Shenendahowa and Shaker students afflicted by this tragedy. We have reached out to the Shenendahowa school district and plan on collecting funds to put towards a scholarship in the fallen students names. As well, two teams, one composed of Shen seniors and one of Shen alumni, have entered the tournament and will play in the games this December 18th and 20th.
All donations, regardless of amount, are appreciated.
