WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT:

Is someone you know struggling to figure out the difference between a tweet and a text?

A friend and a follower?

Pinterest and Tumblr?

Today many grownups are being left behind with poor or non-existent digital skills. The result?

  • Lack of communication and understanding between generations.
  • An absence of positive digital role models for young people.
  • Negative or dangerous online behaviors.
  • Poor usage of digital tools for learning.

Our goal at www.CyberWise.org is to build a digital learning hub packed with short, entertaining videos, companion guides, and other resources that help busy adults become digitally literate.

What is Digital Literacy?

Digital Literacy is knowing how to use digital tools to connect, communicate, collaborate, and create. Equally important, however, is understanding how to use digital tools wisely, confidently, and safely. Our videos and ebooks help adults learn these essential skills.

Who are We?

We are a 100% volunteer team of “Stage 2 Winners” of the recent prestigious Digital Media and Learning Competition designed to find and fund the most innovative uses of new media in support of connected learning. We have been testing CyberWise videos and companion guides on our website since 2011. The response has been tremendous, and frankly we’ve been so busy creating CyberWise, we haven’t had the time or resources seek funding or sponsors.

Since we really want to keep our resources free,  we thought, “Hey, why don’t we try one of the new digital media platforms we teach adults about?” So that’s why we're here on IndieGogo – the world’s largest crowdfunding website.

Why IndieGogo?

We decided to use IndieGogo to tell the world about CyberWise, and at the same time tell CyberWise followers about crowdfunding/crowdsourcing (read our blog).

Our Team

CyberWise was founded by two M.A’s in Media Psychology and Social Change from Fielding Graduate University who also have broad backgrounds in entertainment, production and marketing. Read about us here. Our team includes other recent Fielding graduates, professors, and designers who have a broad range of entertainment, gaming, technical, production, and marketing expertise. Together, we want to use our knowledge and skills to help grownups participate in the digital world with confidence.

What Sets Us Apart

Unlike existing tutorials that explain how to use digital media tools, we put our media psychology expertise to work to address the question, “Why is this digital tool beneficial for learning?”  This approach helps alleviate the fear-based resistance that often stands in the way of using digital media in the first place. Our learning hub is designed to empower adults with understanding and then to provide them with resources to try out new skills and tools within a safe, supportive community.

Where Funds Will Go

  • 6 new video tutorials and companion guides (ebook/downloadable PDF) about digital media (if we are so lucky to go over our target, we'll keep producing... there are 100's possible titles on our list!).
  • Redesigned and fully interactive digital hub website.
  • Bi-weekly newsletter and outreach materials.

What You Get

What we really like about this is that everyone wins. You get to choose from one of the "perks" from the right, we get to make our dream come true, and lots of grownups become digitally literate. Hoot hoot.

Summary

The media landscape is undergoing a dramatic transformation, redefining how we learn, play, and communicate with one another. During these exciting times, it’s easy to forget that for many adults this new digital world is confusing and intimidating, and often those being “left behind” include busy educators and parents – the very ones who could be guiding young people through this digital landscape. With your help we can make sure NO GROWNUP GETS LEFT BEHIND.
