Nima: a sprawling, red-dirt neighborhood in the heart of Accra. Rich with culture, community, and history, but long considered a slum, avoided by tourists and Accra residents alike. Within the neighborhood itself, the arts are generally disregarded, often disrespected.
A group of artists born-and-bred in Nima want to change that perception.
Will you help us?
NIMA: MUHINMANCHI ART is conceived to establish Nima as a place for the arts, to bring art to the community, and to empower local JHS students.
The festive opening night, with art, music and food, will draw in both the local neighborhood and greater Accras art and intellectual crowd. We will hold an exhibition and sale of students and artists individual work, to benefit the students and the Junior Art Club, an Accra-based, Nima-founded organization. A mural designed and painted by the students and artists will act as the centerpiece of the opening and serve as a lasting art installation in the neighborhood.
JHS students, emerging and established artists, residents of Nima, and attendees from greater Accra
We seek to foster a positive perception of art and give the
students a chance to explore their creativity. The work brings art beyond
gallery and museum walls, into the every day of one of Accras poorest
neighborhoods. Individual works will go home with people from all over Accra
(maybe one will go to you). The mural will stay in Nima. Such a project, never
before seen in Nima, is a unique opportunity for people from the neighborhood to
create and appreciate an installation; and for people from all over Accra to
participate with art in a space they might not usually encounter.
What We Need
Art Supplies: $200 (paints, brushes, glue, scissors, canvas)
Food: $200 (rice, chicken, nibbles, refreshments, cutlery)
Promotional Materials: $40 (flyers, cards, invitations)
*June 7 update* turns out we need $120 for promotional materials... Poster printing costs aren't so affordable when you don't have the Haverford printing center. So more support would be, ahem, great.
Miscellaneous costs: $60 (board from the market, rope and settings for display, stamps for invitations)
To explain: were seeking local sponsors to contribute supplies, ergo amounts listed are lower than actual costsbut our demands are pretty high, and we need some partial contributions.
If we raise extra money (!), well use the funds to make the event bigger and better, whether this means more art, food, music, etc.
