The biggest problem for Sandy victims in Rockaway is the lack of power and heat. People are sleeping in unheated, unlit homes and since their electrical systems were flooded with salt water, there is no immediate hope for this to change.
Supporters like you have already pitched in with almost 20,000 boxes, 40-50 tons of food, huge donations by corporations like Diapers.com and Fairway, thousands of coats. But now we need to get very specific help to Sandy victims - fast.
The weather is getting cold and starting just after Thanksgiving it will be frigid. A brutal winter is predicted.
We need to get sleeping bags and other winter camping gear to thousands of people who are freezing in their own homes- and do it fast. We are ready to deliver thousands of sleeping bags and other warming supplies through our network of sites on the ground in Rockaway and nearby. Please help us.
We partnered with Manhattan Jewish Experience (MJE) so that people who heard about our work and wanted to be able to support our efforts could do so through a well-established 501c3 non-profit organization. We are determined to be an efficient and nimble organization that can respond to community needs within the hour – not the week or the month.
We already delivered a giant tractor trailer filled with sleeping bags on Friday 11/30 and anything we raise today will go into the next shipment.
ALL PROCEEDS GO DIRECTLY TO PROVIDING RELIEF TO PEOPLE AFFECTED BY HURRICANE SANDY (minus the small credit card fee). We are a grass roots, volunteer-run operation and do not have any high overhead costs that need to be managed.
