Meet Beth, Go Girl's Mommy:
Hi! My name is Beth Santos and I'm founder and editor-in-chief of Go Girl, an online travel magazine and community for women. Three years ago, I was riding my motorcycle to work in São Tomé and Príncipe (sounds like a normal day, right?) when I realized something --there are just not enough resources out there for women who want to take a bite out of their world.
What ever do you mean?
Sure, there are sites where you can get plenty of information about where to go and what to do for a good beach vacation. But there aren't many places that talk about the gritty details -- how it feels to be on a crowded bus in Barranquilla, Colombia, trying to navigate your way for the first time through the city. What to do when you're walking through Rome by yourself at two in the morning and someone yells at you from the darkness. And being a woman nonetheless.
We women need more opportunities to express ourselves as global citizens. To share our stories, to meet other women, and to encourage one another to travel, be engaged, and take risks.
Over time, Go Girl has grown to a community of 6,000 monthly readers in over 110 countries around the world. We host the weekly #girlstravel Twitter chat, the only travel chat on Twitter exclusively for women. We run regular Meetup events in Chicago to encourage women to meet one another and network. And we share daily content on our website. In a world where only 6% of female travelers are under the age of 35, we're actually starting to make a difference.
Sounds like you're doing just fine. What's the problem?
Here's the deal: our website is the pits. I'm an art history major -- I have no computer science experience whatsoever -- and managing this site has become an absolute
chore. With our growing community, we need a real designer and a real programmer to take our site to the next level.
After drafting out a new site with our awesome designer, Zrinka, we realized
we needed about US $5,000 to pull the rest of it together. This includes:
- Creating an easily navigable (!) site that actually doesn't have bugs in it
- Developing a social network so women can more easily connect with one another
- Allowing our site visitors to create their own blogs and learn about new places to visit
- Crazy idea: Starting a sort of female couchsurfing capability?
- And so much more I can hardly explain it all
Every bit helps. Each page we create costs money, both to pay the designer and the programmer. If we can't make $5,000, then we can use what we do make. If we make more than $5,000, then that means our site can just get that much more awesome.
How will Go Girl make a difference?
Go Girl is already making a difference for women around the world, but our shoes no longer fit. We want to expand and we need the tools to do it -- networking events in hubs around the world, fresh content everyday that can be enjoyed well past its launch date, a community of empowered women that support one another. Our website is our home, and our home has grown too small. Help us take the next step forward in promoting travel among women, connecting like-minded women to one another, and getting women more deeply involved in the world around them.
What do I get out of this?
Check out some of the awesome perks on the right sidebar -- all of our donors above $10 get something special for showing they care!
Here's the deal...I'm broke.
It's ok if you don't have money (join the club, right?). Here are some ways that you can still help the cause:
- Ask your frinends and family to get the word out. Share this page and our video on Facebook, Twitter, and around your networks. Encourage them to donate some change.
- Shoot us an email to email@example.com! We're always looking for event sponsors, advertisers on our website, gifts in kind -- you never know how you can make a difference.
Thanks for reading and watching -- and thanks for helping grow the voices of women around the world.
