We are Sophistafunk, an analog-soul trio from Syracuse, NY. Adam plays the keyboards and sings; Emanuel plays the drums, sampler, and sings backup; and Jack is the MC, bringing inspirational and positive lyrics to the deep pocket grooves produced live on stage. We represent Syracuse, NY and all young hard-working musicians. Each year we perform more than 200 shows all over the US, and we will continue to do so with your help!
This campaign is crucial to our success because of several factors. First off, we hope that the release of our new EP will engage our current fans with fresh music, as well as attract new listeners to our style of funk music. Next, we found that in 2011 ALONE we spent upwards of $18,000 on fuel! That's a ton of money going to the oil companies rather than our own livelihood. Lastly, we want to take Sophistafunk to the next level by becoming an INTERNATIONALLY touring band. This is a huge step for us, and we are confident that the people of the United Kingdom will appreciate what we have to offer.
You as contributors will help us achieve the unimaginable. Most bands request $20k for a new van ALONE, but with this money we will pay for the recording, mixing, mastering, artwork, CD manufacturing, AND vinyl manufacturing of our new EP, "Freedom Is". The funding will also afford us the diesel conversion van AND the installation of a kit to allow it to run on vegetable oil, saving us at least $15,000 per year in fuel costs! We will also be able to pay for the 5'x8' trailer which will making touring safer and more comfortable. And just to top it off, this $20k will even pay for round trip flights for the three of us to go to the UK and spread our music WORLDWIDE!
What We Need & What You Get
- New EP - $7,000
Once again we are working with our brother Jocko at MoreSound Studios in Syracuse, NY. Jocko has been amazing to work with. Effecient, creative, crazy-fun, and also an auxilliary percussion player on our albums! Your contribution will pay for the recording, mixing, and mastering of our new EP titled "Freedom Is".
We will print 1,000 4-panel digipacks (CDs) of this new EP, as well as 500 180-gram 12" vinyl records. Both with full-color artwork by our friend Jon Daly, who has also done the artwork for our debut EP, and our full-length "Twentyeleven".
-----> Perks include digital copies of the album, CDs, vinyl records, combo-packages
-----> LIMITED Perks include SIGNED copies of the CDs and vinyl!
- Diesel Tour Van - $3,800
The money we raise will pay for the purchase of Pat Sajak, our 1995 GMC Duravan 2500 DIESEL. This van is amazing, sturdy, without rust, clean, and affordable. Since it is diesel, it is the perfect candidate for the veggie-oil conversion, we'll get more into that in a second.
-----> LIMITED Perks include a once-in-a-lifetime tour with us in the fabulous Pat Sajak on any one of our 5-10 day tours in 2013/14.
- Vegetable Oil Conversion - $5,000
You may not know this, but ALL deisel engines are capable of running on vegetable oil! Sam over at Full Circle Fuels is going to customize Pat Sajak (our van) to run on USED fryer oil. That's right! We can literally tour the United States in a van that runs on the same thing you deep fry your chicken in. To make it even more incredible, Adam (keyboards) owns Funk 'n Waffles, which is a waffle restaurant featured on Diner's Drive-ins and Dives on the Food Network. Funk 'n Waffles can provide enough "grease" for us to run our van for plenty of miles, let alone all the other restaurants and venues we play that can provide us with their waste-oil as well!
Sam will install two additional fuel tanks for us to full with used vegetable oil. Each tank will be filtered, and one will be brought to temp before the filtered oil goes into the engine compartment. We will get the same milage as regular diesel, and we will save at least $15,000 in fuel costs every year!!!
-----> LIMITED Perks include 10-50 orders of Chicken & Waffles @ Funk 'n Waffles. Help us get the "grease" we need by buying multi-packs of that delicious meal you can't get anywhere else!
- 5'x8' Enclosed Trailer - $1,200
Our 5'x8' enclosed trailer is a crucial element in our touring rig. First off, its about safety, and by keeping all our equipment in a trailer rather than in the van itself, the trailer ensures that if we ever get in a crash, we won't be injured by our own equipment! Next, the trailer saves the van from unnecessary hauling of our gear on the shocks, struts, and chassy. With the trailer, we also have enough room to grow as a band, allowing us space to put a full lighting rig and a larger PA if necessary.
-----> LIMITED Perks include a complimentary large furniture or similar moving job utilizing the spacious 5'x8' trailer you helped us purchase. We will travel up to 250 miles to move a piano, couch, anything you need that'll fit inside this beautiful trailer.
- UK Tour - $3,000
Our good friend Joe Driscoll has been living out in the UK for several years, bringing the hot and heavy Syracuse funk to the ears of the United Kingdom for some time. In August of this summer we plan to take our new EP WORLDWIDE by joining Joe & Sekou as they tour the UK on the way to Shambala Festival. We will be performing with them the whole way and at the festival itself. This last $3k will go to the three round-trip flights from JFK to Heathrow airport in London.
If we don't reach our goal, we will use the majority of the funds to pay for the production of the CD and Vinyl as well as the studio time. If there's enough to cover the expense of purchasing the van and trailer we will apply it there. We hope to cover everything, which is why we are being very thrifty with this $20,000. You can look around and see that many bands spend $20k on one album alone, or one van alone. But our fundraiser will cover a van, trailer, conversion to vegetable oil, studio time, CDs, vinyl, and a trip to the UK. You will not find this value in any other BAND-oriented fundraiser!
