This October, the sensational Scottish folk trio LAU will present their curatorial event, WELCOME TO LAU LAND at the King’s Place in London. This is a 4-day arts festival celebrating innovative and renowned artists whom LAU love. It will also mark the launch of their imminent new studio album, RACE THE LOSER.
We're delighted to have been commissioned by LAU to create a new piece of work to premiere at this event; and on October 20th our new project, NEVADA will screen with a live score by LAU. We share the evening's spot with a headline performance by Domino Record’s epic KING CREOSOTE & JON HOPKINS.
Please go HERE for event details.
Please go HERE for details on OUR evening. (The best one).
LAU’s brief was simple; select what we want from their new album, and make anything we want to accompany it visually, for approximately 20 minutes.
Our response; NEVADA - a short experimental film about hate, which will poetically interpret the demise of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller's marriage, in a visceral triptych.
We envisage this project culminating in a cross-platform experimental work. In the first instance, our film will be screened to an audience while LAU performs. We will also edit and mix an independent version of the music and audio for festival submission and screenings, while there is also scope for installation presentations. We also intend to document the 'making of' and premiere screening of the project.
Taking inspiration from the enriching process of making previous experimental commission, BAROQUE (Fesitval Delle Lettere)- Dave and I will create a beautiful mood piece with a narrative backbone, powerful themes and strong central characters, finding it’s home in a format located somewhere between that of a music video and short film. I want to write a story in three acts, then present these out of order, bringing a different weight to each and challenging an audience’s perspective. The film will be an engrossing, expressionistic piece, which ought to take an audience's attention hostage.
*Still from, BAROQUE (2011)
I’m excited to explore a subject, which I’m extremely passionate about. In the past I’ve written characters with the influence of Monroe, but I’ve never directly tackled her. There’s a great deal of complexity to who Marilyn was and who she was with Arthur. They were a couple that used one another; who promised to save one another, who failed to do so and who wound up hating each other. It does seem to me as though they liked the ‘idea’ of one another more than the reality of being together.
I’m also interested in how post-marriage (and following Marilyn’s death) Miller continually re-imagined her – his way – as a figure in his work. As though he was repeatedly attempting to process what went wrong, who she was and ultimately, in my opinion, by means of defending himself.
The film will deal with four major themes: HATE, PERFORMANCE, RESCUE and LOSS, which are all very bold atmospherically and which will intermingle and reference each other throughout. We will take the three LAU songs, FAR FROM PORTLAND, SAINT MONDAY and TORSA, and build three narrative sections all set in the same ‘space,’ all with the same two characters embodying a "MARILYN" and an "ARTHUR".
We will explore, in great detail, the journey between sensitivity and violence.
We will shoot in an interior location in either Edinburgh or Glasgow in AUGUST from the 27-30TH, and we will run our campaign for 6 weeks, moving into pre-production close to knowing what our final budget is likely to be. Of course this is where YOU (the very wonderful person who’s not stopped reading yet) comes in…
With the support of all donations raised through our campaign we aim to achieve various goals. For NEVADA we will regroup with exceptional talent from our previous projects and would feel much more comfortable paying these skilled crafts-folk for their valued time, and providing each department with healthy budgets in order to reach their full potentials.
In basic terms: we'd LIKE to use a jazzy camera and hire the lights that Dave can work his magic with. I'd like to buy rehearsal time and make a total mess with paint and other substances on the day. But we NEED to (safely) create large set pieces involving revolving mechanics. We need to pay special attention to detailed tailored costuming and transformative make up. We need to cover expenses and feed and water our production. Many of our crew come from farther afield, so we must pay their passage to Scotchland. We need to employ a dance choreographer and a fight co-ordinator to ensure that our actors don’t die on set. Trust me, There Will Be Blood.
We have seen great successes come about through campaigns such as this one. We hope we can encourage and inspire enough of a following to allow our project to be the best it can be. We really want to show off what we see in our MINDZ.
Thank you very much for YOUR time. Death to word-counts!
PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR WEB-LINKS BELOW and should you desire to, FOLLOW us both on TWITTER where we promise to be witty and keep you well informed about how our campaign and production is progressing… AND if any of you should feel inclined to SPREAD THE WORD on this for us, PLEASE, gossip away and paste it all over walls et all - we will be forever in your social networking DEBT.

RUTH PAXTON | WRITER / DIRECTOR
Complementing the performance is a film by rising superstar of Scottish film Ruth Paxton (Winner - Best Short Film, London Film Festival 2011) with a live soundtrack from Lau. This evening’s work has been created specially for the event.
"Ruth's work is very musical in nature, almost symphonic in form, lending itself ideally to being screened in a performance situation with a live band"
DAVID LIDDELL | CINEMATOGRAPHER / EDITOR
David Liddell is an award-winning Cinematographer and 2010 graduate of the National Film and Television School, where he specialised in a Masters in Cinematography.

MISSY MALONE | PLAYING ‘MARILYN’
Once more into the breach, dear friend! Paxton's favourite muse returns for more movie-making action…
Missy Malone is a heady cocktail of 1950’s bombshell and classic rock chick. A highly accomplished and sought-after performer on the UK burlesque scene who has performed internationally and has graced the cover of several publications and campaigns. Missy is also the creator and producer of the five-star rated “Missy Malone & Friends Burlesque Revue” touring UK Theatre Burlesque Revue.
LOUIS PAXTON | PLAYING ‘ARTHUR’
Louis has agreed to put his actor-goggles on and embody his sister's interpretation of playwright Miller. He'd better do a good job. No pressure son.
Louis Paxton is a talented young writer and film-maker with a bold cinematic vision. Louis began experimenting with video at an early age, using friends and family to help him realise his early ideas. Louis’ short films reveal a love of genre, but rather than straight homage to the various forms – horror, thriller, heist, musical – he blends in a distinct comedic sensibility. His short FOOL PROOF won the Jim Poole Audience Award for best short in 2010. Louis is currently studying for his MA in Directing Fiction at the National Film and Television School.
