MYCincinnati (Music for Youth in Cincinnati) is a free youth orchestra program in Price Hill. Founded on the idea that personal transformation can be achieved by striving towards musical excellence, MYCincinnati offers children in Price Hill the opportunity to learn violin, viola, cello, or bass and play in an orchestra. MYCincinnati is inspired by El Sistema, Venezuela's revolutionary youth orchestra program that uses music as a vehicle for social change. Students enrolled in MYCincinnati meet for 10 hours a week in our building on Warsaw Avenue, a centrally located street in Price Hill. The program consists of group and private lessons, sectionals, orchestra, musicianship, and frequent performances.
MYCincinnati is a program of Price Hill Will, a 501(c)3 non-profit community development organization. All contributions to MYCincinnati are tax-deductible, including contributions made to this campaign.
MYCincinnati was founded in October 2011 with 11 students and 2 staff members. We have since grow to 50 students, a long waiting list, 4 staff members, and a wonderful and growing team of volunteers. We hope to continue growing to meet the desire of youth in the Price Hill community who want to study music. Our dream for the not-to-distant future is to start a second site in Price Hill, and to expand our current site by finding additional rehearsal space nearby.
Since 2011 we’ve collaborated with some great people and organizations to host some exiting events.
What We Need
We need your help! MYCincinnati is a grassroots organization, and we learned the hard way how to stretch every penny. In the beginning we had instruments on loan, shared space that was lent to us for free, and only two teachers. We are slowly but steadily gaining momentum and becoming sustainable. We need your help to continue growing and thriving. The funds from this campaign will be used to support our Teaching Artists, and to cover our building costs (we have our own awesome space, but we are responsible for utilities).
Laura Jekel, MYCincinnati’s founder, was one of 10 people chosen to take part in the 2010-2011 Sistema Fellows Program, a training program through New England Conservatory that is helping to develop El Sistema-inspired programs in the United States. The fellowship included a five-week residency in Venezuela. An accomplished cellist, Laura has performed and taught throughout Latin America and the United States, and is a founding member of the Price Hill String Quartet.
Laura knows that a big part of what makes MYCincinnati great is her incredible team of teachers: Eddy Kwon (Assistant Director and Lead Teacher), Josh Fink (Beginning Orchestra), and Eric Seligman (Musicianship and Bucket Drumming). She knows that one of the main reasons that kids come every day is to spend time, have fun, and play music with these three amazing guys.
Eddy Kwon, is a violinist, composer, improviser, teacher and artistic collaborator. Though his formal studies are rooted firmly in classical chamber and orchestral music, Eddy has always loved and explored many different traditions -- from folk to punk to jazz to hip-hop and experimental noise.
Josh Fink has composed for film, soloed with orchestras, competed on season 5 of America's Got Talent, and insists that his MYCincinnati students obtain a deep level of musical understanding through singing, movement, and focus.
Eric Seligman is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from New York who now resides in Cincinnati's Price Hill. Eric's band names are listed here in chronological order of their inception: Black Tie Affair, Rotimi and the Rainmakers, Fuzzy Moon, Zamin, Reels Green, Fleur de Lune, Passerines, and Baby Cleo.
You Will Be Rewarded
This October, 11 MYCincinnati students took a trip to the Music Resource Center to record a CD. They created an amazing product with hand-drawn cover art and 12 beautiful sounding tracks. This CD can be yours for any contribution of $25 and up. If you need your CD in time for the holidays, we can try to make that happen (otherwise they will be sent in late January). Please let us know.
