Hi there! We are Jane Blue and the Hunters, a multi disciplinary collective of artists, passionate about music and film.
We started our collaboration after graduating art-school in Arnhem, the Netherlands in 2006. Independently, we have been producing critically acclaimed music videos and live performances since. We are here to raise awareness and funds, to realize our desire to create a new film, for a song from our upcoming debut album. The song is called Virgin Snow. But more about that later, first a bit of background on who we are, and what we have been doing so far!
Artschool graduates Sil van der Woerd (director / filmmaker), Djovrie Krus (costume designer ), Elmar Noteboom (producer / web designer) and myself (singer and performer Jane Blue), got together 6 years ago with the ambition to make a music video for a song called Worms (2007) under our former name: Lolly Jane Blue.
We didn't have a budget, but with innovative solutions we made a little bit of money go a long way. We created dresses out of paper and plastic instead of Italian silk, and with the help of many friends, we pulled off our first music video. It didn't go unnoticed :)
Worms received multiple international awards, and became a small online success gathering 350,000 views.
A live tour booked by Mojo Concerts followed, kicking off at Noorderslag-Eurosonic, the Netherlands. The tour brought our music, films and visuals to the most exciting venues and festivals in the Netherlands.
We have made 4 more official music films since, always skirting the edges of the impossible, such as creating a huge costume and chandeliers that materialize from real cotton candy in our film White Swan (2009).
Our latest film Requiem 2019 was a collaboration with actor Rutger Hauer, whom we had the pleasure to meet at his own film festival in Milan. There, White Swan was awarded Best Music Video and Best Music Performance. Requiem 2019 premiered in Amsterdam in November 2012 and was staff picked at Vimeo. It has since gathered close to 400,000 views.
In this same period I recorded my debut album with fellow musician and producer Max Jones, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Laurens van de Meulen and Jacek Koba. This album will be released in June 2013 and is musically best described as melancholic contemporary folk in a dark dreamy coat.
From this album we chose the song Virgin Snow, for which we would love to make another incredible film.
I wrote Virgin Snow during a fierce white winter in Scotland, where I live. It reflects on very personal memoirs of that time. When Sil, the filmmaker, heard Virgin Snow, he knew that was the song he wanted to make the new film to. That same night, a brilliant concept poured from his imagination and the next morning the blueprint for the film was there.
Without giving too much away, what is the film about?
This film is going to be a significant new direction in our work. In the past, our films were mostly performance-based. This time, we are going to raise the bar for ourselves and explore a much deeper, richer story telling, with the inclusion of a professional actor.
The film will be a 9 minute piece around the song Virgin Snow.
The song is about an internal conflict between reality and personal fiction; a crumbling bridge between the romantic and the real. This idea is intriguingly adapted to the concept of the film. Both stories will be told parallel to each other. The story of the real relationship centers around a troubled road-trip, the fictional relationship will use a much more abstract, emotionally charged cinematography. We have some very interesting ideas that we don't want to give away yet, but it goes without saying that our mesmerizing, visual style will fit here beautifully.
We are used to delivering high quality made with low budgets. How do we do this?
We don't pay ourselves for putting in countless hours, and we also have many wonderful friends who love to help us out. Our journey has been very rewarding in many ways. Collaborating with passionate, talented artists and friends just brings us so much joy and inspiration!
...but we still need some budget. Why?
We are magicians (sort of) when it comes to music and film. But we have yet to master the trick of turning stone into gold (if you know it, please shoot us an email).
Until then, we hope to collect our budget here!
How will we spend the budget?
We will work with our wonderful, four-strong team. None of us gets payed. We have most of our own equipment too. But for this specific film we will need some external film crew to help us; a Director of Photography and an actor. And most importantly, the film will be shot in a gorgeous location, which means we will have to fly there, and all of us have to be accommodated during the shoot. 9 minutes is fairly long for a music film and we need about a week to shoot our ambitious picture. Most of the budget will be spent on this.
We will also use the budget to buy materials for costumes, to build some props and rent some other items like an old car for the beautiful art direction that we have in mind.
Why would you support us?
We release all our videos on the internet, so that they can be enjoyed and shared by all. We are very thankful for the appreciation we have received by millions across the globe.
We very well know that nothing comes from nothing, therefore we don't expect you to support us for nothing either :) So please take a look at the wonderful, unique perks we have to offer!
If you do not have the means to support us financially, but still want to give us a wee hand making this film happen, we would really appreciate it if you would spread the word and tell people about our project and the possibility to be part of it!
If you've made it all the way here, thank you so very much for reading and we hope you will come on board!!
O blow, ye winds, hi-ho!xxx Jane Blue
