February 16th, 2012 was the worst day of our lives.
Two days after Valentines Day, a man armed with a gun and an accelerant barged into a home shared by several roommates in East Hollywood and proceeded to shoot everyone in the house multiple times. He then doused the house with a flammable liquid, lit a match and then took his own life. It took over a hundred firefighters to manage the blaze.
Everyone who was in that house became an innocent victim of violence that day. The only male survivor, who was also shot in the head, somehow managed to drag the two female shooting victims out of the burning house and by doing so, also became a hero that day. Out of the four roommates who were shot, one unfortunately did not survive. He was tragically in the worst place in the house, at the worst time.
One of the severely injured victims was my beautiful Daughter, Shaunna. Apparently, she was the reason he came there that day, as she had once been in a relationship with this man and they also had a business together at one time. Surprisingly, there were no prior incidents of violence or obvious warning signs that this man was capable of doing these horrendous acts.
For whatever reasons, really known only to him, he snapped.
My Daughter was shot is the face and once in the neck. She is currently in a tremendous amount of pain and is paralyzed on one side of her face. She also suffered a broken jaw and the loss of her eyesight in one eye. This injury has been especially traumatic for her, as she is a gifted artist.
She has raised two wonderful children as a single mom, a lovely daughter who starts college in the fall and a son who is graduating from UCLA this year after earning a scholarship. She has put on a brave face for their sake but she lost everything in the fire and even worse, she has no health insurance. It is by the grace of God and a true miracle that she is alive but, she still has to deal with the harsh reality of astronomical medical bills, as she tries to literally put her life back together.
All the innocent victims have already suffered a great deal and continue to still suffer major physical complications. There is also a desperate need for counseling by mental health professionals because they are all trying to deal with the trauma and stress from this terrible incident. My Daughter, is carrying an exceptionally heavy burden, as she was the original intended target.
Any amount that anyone can generously donate will be greatly appreciated. Every dollar raised will go straight into an account set up for my Daughter to literally help her get back on her feet. If you or anyone you know or love has ever been a victim of domestic violence, you may understand how devastating something like this can be.
Any donation would help ;)
Thank you so much for your kindness and consideration.
Kerri (Shaunna's Mom)
