Who am I?
Hi, I'm Paul Berry, a web developer living in the UK. I've been passionate about programming and development my whole life, and active in commercial development for the past 10 years or so.
What's the idea?
On june 6th 2013 former NSA contracter leaked information about PRISM, a secret NSA program that allows the US goverment to collect information about pretty much everyone, direct from the internet. As more and more information is stored in 'the cloud' more and more of your private data is accessible by this program.
Mortix is designed to stop that.
Mortix is a platform and more importantly an idea. The idea is that everyone is entitled to privacy. The platform is designed to give everyone that privacy.
Mortix will also be 100% open source. When you can see how something works, you can be sure there's nothing affecting your privacy.
How does it work?
Mortix makes use of 'asymmetric encryption', an amazing use of mathematics which (as much as anything can) ensures perfect secrecy in communications. The basic premise is that a pair of numbers is generated, these are called the public key and the private key. Messages encrypted using the public key can only ever be decrypted by the holder of the privater key. To ensure your privacy, Mortix never sees your private key, it's kept safe by you, which means no-one but you can read your messages.
By producing a platform and an API I aim to give anyone the tools to produce their own applications that make use of this secure and private messaging solution. I hope to see applications providing chat services, social media, file sharing... all based around the Mortix API.
So what's the money for?
Mortix is currently in the prototype stage. The platform is up and running, messages can be exchanged...but it's a bit rough and ready. The money will be used for the following:
- Development costs. To further progress development I need resources. A new computer, a testing platform etc. If I raise enough I might have a contractor do some of the work here.
- Server costs. If Mortix takes off, the amount of traffic generated could be immense. I need to have some money in hand to pay those server costs
- Graphic design services. As you can see from the images attached to this campaign, I'm no designer. To attract interest (and make the project self funding through donations / advertising)
What do you get?
Aside from the satisfaction of contributing to a more secure world? I'm still working on ideas for perks, but high level donations can expect a mention on the 'donators' page on the main mortix website, lower levels will be exciting and unique T-shirt designs, keyrings etc.
Thanks for reading this far, I hope you've seen something you like and decided to help out. Even if you can't make a monetary contribution, please please spread the word and get your friends involved.
Together we can take back our privacy.
