UPDATE: Thanks to the St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church fund for their pledge of $2,000! Even though the gift will not be filtered through this site, it still moves us that much closer to the goal!
'Everyone has the power for greatness -- not for fame, but greatness, because greatness is determined by service.'

Williamsport Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
On January 18, 2014 the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Committee will hold their second annual Day of Service at the Recreation Center of Lycoming College. The service project for this year is a meal packing event. We plan on packaging 40,000 meals of either rice and beans or macaroni and cheese at the Lycoming College Recreation Center. These sealed packages will be distributed through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to families throughout the area.
What We Are Asking
- We are looking to raise at least $8,000 to help pay for and transport the food and equipment needed to carry out this project.
- Funds received above the goal will either go to increase our meal count or will be held to create a head start for next year's project.
Help Make a Difference
Communities across the United States have made a commitment to make their observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a "Day on, not a day off" by honoring his legacy through service to their community. While it occurs a few days before the actual holiday, this event provides an opportunity for us to come together to strengthen our community not only by serving those in need but by developing relationships with neighbors we don't even know yet.
Other Ways You Can Help
We recognize that financial assistance will be difficult for some. But there are other ways to help! Whether you can give or not, please consider these additional opportunities:
- Get the word out! Use the share tools on this site or use word of mouth - anything to spread the word!
- Come and serve on January 18! More details will be added to this event in the coming weeks.
