THANKS TO ALL WHO SUPPORTED US!!!
In the spring of 2007, Daniel saw an ad for a job with the O'Connell family who were looking for someone to take care of their beloved patron, Byron, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Despite having no experience with Alzheimer's, Daniel evolved quickly as a caregiver and companion to 85-year old Byron. He presently lives with Byron and his family.
Over the years, Daniel captured an unpredictable and fascinating dynamic with Byron during 120 (!) hours of footage as they traveled together through the various stages of Alzheimer's.
Dutch filmmaker Bas Voorwinde met Daniel in 2009 and he encouraged and coached him to continue shooting his interactions with Byron. He already knew then that this could become something very special.
With your help we can raise the awareness on this crippling illness, help others face the disease and tell a remarkable story all at the same time.
What We Need & Why
Daniel and Bas need to meet again in New York, and have some living expenses paid, in order to start the task of sifting through all the footage together and selecting what parts and scenes best tell the story of the curious companionship between Mister Driftwood and Daniel.
Bas would like to also:
- Interview Byron’s children and his wife Mary, whose perseverance has certainly been the reason for Byron’s consistently smiling nature. For this we need sound equipment for instance.
- Take some necessarsy additional shots to complete the cinematography of the film.
Apart from a movie, we also want to develop a website, where Daniel’s humanistic approach to personal caregiving can be further expanded upon and where the O’Connell family will also share their insights on dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. We have also recently found an able webmaster (Anne Kavanagh) to build the website with us. The preliminary results can already be viewed.
What we offer in return
We have consciously chosen to fund our project through crowdfunding, because through this platform we can build a small (online-)community of interested people that can contribute to and learn from one and other about caregiving, Alzheimer’s and old age.
Therefore, as our ‘perks’, we offer several interactive items (all named after Byron's favorite chracters).
Some further resources for you to explore the world of Mister Driftwood:
www.mrdriftwood.com - For now a simpler version of what will soon be a blog, a series of instructional videos on humanistic personal caregiving, a gallery of pictures, and an homage to Byron through a collection of testimonials by his family.
https://www.facebook.com/MrDriftwoodMovie - Byron’s first web-presence, friend him to see some extra videos, and pictures of his life, and stay updated on the project.
If anything, we ask you to spread the word, online and offline, and introduce Mister Driftwood to your friends and family.
And if you can, donate to our campaign, so that we can present this story of one tough family and their relentless support of a man they dearly and deeply love.
Many, many heartfelt thanks,
Daniel, Bas, and the O'Connell household.
