Violence is the leading cause of injury, disability and premature death and is a risk factor and cause of long term mental and physical health problems. Violence disproportionately affects youth in inner cities. Violence prevention programs are essential to creating healthy communities.
Our hearts have led us to work in Los Angeles, California. In Los Angeles, all violent and non-violent crimes are higher than the national average and the city struggles with issues such as high numbers of homeless, poverty and unemployment and a high rate of uninsurance. Los Angeles also faces many of the same problems as other U.S. cities including high rates of diabetes, hypertension, homicide, AIDS and STDS. Overweight and obese children and adults are on the rise, with the highest numbers in African Americans and Latinos. The Los Angeles Unified School District also has one of the highest drop out rates in the country, with 48% of students reported as dropping out in 2005.
Indigo International has created the Midnight Basketball program to help inspire peace and empower young men between the ages of 12 and 19 through improving the quality of life through access to mental health services and education, healthy eating and sexual health programs and through the creation of our Midnight Basketball Leagues, that offer safe and empowering spaces to learn and play for youth in the city.
Our program provides youth with positive, alternative late night basketball leagues that operate on Friday and Saturday nights while also providing empowering education including healthy eating, mindful meditation and adolescent sexual health, to help the youth in these areas realize their full potential. The goals of the program are to strengthen relationships between businesses, professionals, teachers, parents, law enforcement and local youth, improve self-esteem, and enhance interpersonal and developmental skills through the use of mentors. Our program also offers seasonal tournaments, basketball camps and a college scholarship program.
Indigo International is a non-profit holistic health organization dedicated bring holistic treatment and education into at-risk communities across the globe. We offer holistic health services, programs, trainings and products. We are dedicated to honoring and serving all people through our philosophy of radical inclusion. We welcome adults, teens and children of all races, religions and ages into our community. Indigo International was formed in 2011 in response to the need for low cost and free healthcare in at-risk communities across our country, and across the globe.
The long term vision of our Midnight Basketball Program is to increase health education and violence prevention in schools and at-risk communities across the globe. We believe that the key to healing our children is engaging them in their health through empowering them with the knowledge and tools they need to be healthy.
With funding, our program will be able to serve 400 young men in the Los Angeles area between the ages of 12 and 19.
What We Need & What You Get
When our program is funded we will operate weekly Midnight Basketball Practices and seasonal tournaments for youth in the city. Youth will have access to weekly empowering and engaging talks before every basketball practice, local community mentors to guide them in the direction of their ideal career access to online resources to help them stay connected throughout the week. The program is run by a part-time director and part time site manager who work together with the Midnight Basketball Association to orchestrate our safe spaces, uniforms, volunteer coaches and referees and community outreach.
For every $100 donated, one young man will gain access to our weekly programs and services including our empowering educational programs, basketball practices and tournaments and mentoring. All youth involved in the program all recieve free uniforms, healthy food and basketballs.
If we do not receive our entire funding request, all funds will be poured into the Midnight Basketball Program staff payroll, for they are truly the heart of what we do!
Midnight Basketball Programs have been running in the United States for over 30 years. The cities where these programs have been implemented have shown reduced crime rates including lower juvenile arrests, lower juvenile incidents reported to the police and lower property crime rates.
Through the integration of an empowering preventive health program, Our Midnight Basketball Programs also seek to reduce the risk of asthma, depression, suicide, obesity, diabetes, teen pregnancies and HIV and AIDS within the communities of Los Angeles youth we will serve.
