We recommend watching the video in HD -- it's difficult to see the game's shader effects & particle subtleties in SD.
Folders as portals, enemies representing real files, a convoluted story, collectible loot, unlocking of directories, scoring & customizable ships: Metanact aims to be a fun way of taking stress out on your files. Tedious english assignment? Blow it to smithereens. Enact on the Meta.
Metanact was written completely from scratch in C++; using only a couple of libraries: namely SFML for graphics & audio, Boost.C++ for filesystem traversal; and JSONcpp for some parsing.
Metanact is currently Windows-only, because of the inherently big difference in filesystems across OSs, HOWEVER: If you're familiar with the technologies I've used; you'll realize they're all cross-platform. I hereby guarantee a Linux port if this gets funded. You can quote me on that.
Programming since I was 8; & burning myself with a soldering iron since I was 9. Been developing games in C++ for the last 4 years or so; although it's by no means my specialty!
Formally, I'm a student, undergoing some exams over the next few months; after which (beginning november) I'll have so much free time I won't know what to do with it. This is when I'll be able to work on the game properly, and full-time.
I enjoy all things VR; playing the piano; and have recently broken into the CNC game with a ShapeOko open-HW CNC..
Other team members
I'm also enlisting the help of a good friend of mine - Josh Willsher, who's ideas and scriptwriting prowess have been paramount during the game's development. In addition: Win Holzapfel, my very capable brother, webmaster and filmographer (not for the current video, annoyingly; that was I) will take care of problems in those areas. They'll be submitting their own updates & text over the next week or so.
Some Extra Thanks
This thing wouldn't have gotten to where it is today without the inspirational ideas & motivation from such people as Dr. David W, Alex. S, Brendan. R, Bootsie. V, Mariam. G; Josh. R.
Thanks for your support!
* Some well-informed folks over on reddit (I'm Schnommus) have informed me that an idea similar to this has actually been implemented before- 'Operation: Inner Space', a 1994 title. Still, I'd say the shaders, nicer graphics, smoother mechanics & cross-platform-ness should be enough to spark some interest in Metanact.
