What’s in the name?

You’ve probably heard of “meme”, but might not know the exact meaning of the word as originally coined by the infamous evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins:

meme  /mēm/

noun: a postulated unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena.

We’ve modified the original spelling in order to make it easy to pronounce in all languages and instantly recognizable.

meme > meem

Where we are now:

  • We are a small, dedicated group of inventors, designers and software engineers who have worked tirelessly, in our own stolen time and with our own shoestring budget, for over three years to develop the software architecture, write the code, develop the User Interface, design the product housing, and build only 2 precious working prototypes (running on just 1 phone platform).
  • We have the first working prototypes compatible with Symbian OS (see the demo video, above).
  • We have a great industrial design and user interface design.
  • We have visited several qualified factories in Shenzhen, China and have identified our prime manufactures and suppliers.
  • We have a great team of software and hardware engineers with proven track records.

Where we need to go:

  • Until now we've done everything on our own with our small team. But the Hardware and Software development and integration necessary to be compatible with all 5 phone platforms will require us to expand our team for this scale undertaking. This will account for approximately 70% of our target funding goal.
  • The remaining costs are for mass-production tooling for producing the Memory Cable housings, custom silicon, bulk electronic components and other materials all necessary to launch the first batch production and fulfill our commitment to our backers.

Who we are:

Anil Goel, Founder MEEM, is the inventor of the Memory Cable and has driven all the development to date, including hardware, software and working prototypes. He holds an MBA from JBIMS/University of Mumbai, and a degree in Engineering from Delhi College of Engineering.

Jozeph Forakis, MEEM Designer, is president/founder of jozeph forakis ... design in New York and Milan, and has +20 years of experience in product design, interaction design and brand strategies for Fortune 500 companies including LG Electronics, Samsung and Yamaha Motors. He was European Design Director for Motorola, and has been responsible for landmark designs for major brands, including Swatch, Logitech and Foscarini. His work is in the MoMA (NY) Permanent Collection.

David Roberts, MEEM Technical Officer, has +20 years of experience in software & hardware development, specializing in systems software and software architecture. He was Director of Research at Symbian/Nokia, a leading supplier of advanced open operating systems to the mobile phone industry until recently.

Sushil Gupta, our Mentor, is a Vice President and Managing Director at Atrenta, India. He has +25 years of experience in engineering and management spanning chip design, design methodologies and EDA software development. Previously, he was head of Motorola's Design Center in Noida, India, where he was responsible for the design of several multi-million gate SoCs for wireless hand sets. He also held senior positions with Texas Instruments, Cadence Design Systems and Duet Technologies.

Risks and challenges

Similar to many Indiegogo projects, we face several key risks and challenges with the MEEM project. The primary risks for us include:

SOFTWARE
Mobile software, due to its very nature, introduces certain problems that need to be solved. These include:
1. The wide variety of devices and software platforms that require development and support.
2. The support and maintenance of software once released into the field.

Many organisations have successfully developed and marketed applications on multiple software platforms. Thus, it is normal to expect that there may be some integration issues in the development phase of the MEEM although the processes and procedures to minimise risks are well understood within the mobile and software industry. They do not impact the feasibility of MEEM.
Industry best practices, together with appropriate tools and infrastructure support, will be implemented to ensure that any such risks are minimised.

HARDWARE
Since the MEEM Memory Cable is reasonably simple in design, it is anticipated that there will be few, if any, hardware integration issues that could possibly undermine the technical feasibility of MEEM.

The hardware module comprises a number of easily obtainable components, which are unlikely to reach end-of-life within the foreseeable future without suitable substitutes becoming available.

INDUSTRIALISATION
Our core MEEM team (see above) has a combined +80 years of experience in delivering complicated projects on time and within specification. Our Industrialization risk is reduced by having strong relationships already in place with first-rate suppliers and manufacturers.

FAQs

Q/ Does MEEM work with all cell phone operating systems?

A/ 1st Generation MEEM will work with following platforms:

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Blackberry
  • Windows Phone
  • Symbian

MEEM will support other platforms in the future.

Q/ How can one guarantee the security of the data transferred to the MEEM memory cable?

A/ The user can set up a 4 digit security code.

Q/ What happens if someone connects my MEEM to another mobile handset?

A/ MEEM recognizes every mobile handset’s unique IMEI number.

If the MEEM security code is activated (which we recommend) , the user will be prompted to enter the security code for authentication.

If the user does not know or does not have the requested security code, MEEM will simply charge the mobile handset.

If the data is not protected by a security code, then MEEM will prompt the user for a command:

  • Back-up
  • Restore
  • Sync

In case the user does not answer the prompt question within 10 seconds, then MEEM will simply charge the mobile handset.

Q/ Can the user set up/choose the specific data items for back up or transfer?

A/ Yes.

Q/ If the mobile handset has a removable memory card, will it be backed up as well?

A/ Yes, MEEM will back up both the handset’s internal memory and the handset’s removable memory (if any), as long as the total data is not greater than your version MEEM memory size.

Q/ Does MEEM keep the user data even if the data is deleted from the phone e.g. pictures?

A/ MEEM is not an external storage device. MEEM mirrors user’s data on the mobile phone at any given time.  If some data is deleted on the mobile phone it will be deleted from the MEEM as well upon the next backup - except for any deleted contacts and call logs.

Q/ How long does it take for the back up or transfer to complete?

A/ Except for the first time, the data back-up or transfer will usually take a couple of minutes as MEEM only backs up incremental changes.

The first time a full data backup is performed, it will take about the same time it takes to save the same data onto a computer.

Q/ What are the consequences of disconnecting the mobile handset during data backup / transfer?

A/ The consequences are similar to disconnecting the mobile handset from a computer during data backup/ transfer: The data will be partially backed up. The next time you connect MEEM, it will perform a normal complete backup or transfer.

Q/ Can my phone still make and receive calls while MEEM is backing up?

A/ Yes.

Q/ Does a mobile phone need an application to work with MEEM?

A/ Yes.

Q/ How is the MEEM application downloaded and/or installed on the mobile phone?

A/ In addition to all the conventional methods for downloading applications to a mobile phone, the appropriate MEEM application will be automatically installed on the mobile phone upon the first connection with MEEM.

Q/ What is the size of MEEM application?

A/ around 1MB.

Q/ Can the data backed up from ONE Handset A be transferred to a SECOND Handset B, even if it’s not necessarily the same carrier?

A/ Yes, MEEM is network operator agnostic.

Q/ Can two people use the same MEEM Cable?

A/ Two people can’t use the same MEEM cable for data backup, but they can both use it for charging their phones.

Q/ How do you deal with files subject to copyright restrictions e.g. music purchased etc?

A/ MEEM will not be able to back up any files subject to copyright restrictions.

Q/ What happens when MEEM is connected to both a computer and the mobile handset?

A/ When the MEEM is connected to both a handset and a computer via the USB port, then MEEM will charge the handset and perform a data backup, as usual.

Q/ What’s the warranty on the MEEM Memory Cable?

A/ One year international Warranty.
